8 month old low muscle tone. Worried

Looking for some advice as I’ve been Googling and now worried sick.

my son is 8.5 months he had an assessment with the health visitor and she has said he is developmentally delayed.

He can’t sit or crawl and arches his back a lot. He is quite unstable and doesn’t feel solid when holding him he often has jerky movements where he throws himself back. He also can’t bear weight on his legs.

health visitor has suggested he has low muscle tone and has referred him to a physiotherapist and paediatrician but didn’t have any advice on what could cause it.

does anyone have any advice or went through similar ? Thanks

We had a very similar experience. After his 8 month check DC was referred to a Child Development Centre for a more detailed assessment. We got great advice from the occupational therapist and also saw a speech therapist. It all worked out well and he is now a strapping teenager who runs competitively. I hope you get some expert advice soon, but please know that all children develop at different rates.Try not to worry - it's good that you have the referral and it will be a chance to speak to the paediatrician about any concerns you may have.

This was me and my 3 DCs. We’re all hyper mobile, none could really sit unaided until they were a year old, they didn’t walk until 18m+ and me 2.

I know googling is scary but there are benign reasons for low muscle tone, just takes a bit longer to work out how to do things

My son is the same. Just later doing physical things.

PS DCs are all teens now with no other issues than being bennett, all 3 failed their 8 month checks due this but when triste at a year were OK, just later doing things

Thanks everyone 💙 I’m hoping he’s just a bit slower and it’s nothing serious then Google is saying things like cerebral palsy but I would have thought that would be picked up early. Hopefully the referrals don’t take too long x

How is he

Ds had low muscle tone, didn't walk until he was 18 months but didn't get a diagnosis until he was 9 where he was diagnosed with hypotonia, he is 19 next week & has also recently been diagnosed with EDS. The main things he struggles with are handwriting, his writing is still like a 5 year old,he had to do all of his written work at school on a laptop. He still can't tie shoelaces, he struggles with buttons & has problems with the muscles in his calves, he has horrific cramps where the muscle has torn before now & he has ended up on crutches before now. I wish he had been diagnosed when he was younger as he would probably had more help instead of teachers telling him off for his writing & been given exercises & physio to stop the damage in his legs.

There are both benign and less benign reasons that can cause low muscle tone, the jerky movements however, just incase please Google west syndrome, it's a type of seizure causing myoclonic jerks. It's probably not what you're describing BUT if it is the earlier it's treated the better to the point where it's a medical emergency. Personally I might book a GP appt for further insight and to ask the medical questions.
