Anyone had a partial denture for their kid

Three year old about to have an extraction of one of his top incisors - debating between leaving the gap and getting one of those partial dentures. But worried it may annoy him/be hard to clean.

Anyone have any experience with this?

WTF, no! I can't imagine any dentist would recommend this.

Weren't you also asking about RCT for a toddler?

Just no.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 16/05/2022 20:38

No just leave the gap, he won't look unusual with a gap in his teeth, most kids of that age have teeth missing or just coming through. It will be uncomfortable and annoying and completely unnecessary

Interested in how you think upper and lower impressions will be facilitated in a 3 year old 🤦‍♀️
Very unrealistic.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/05/2022 20:56

Just leave it. Both my DDs managed to knock out one of their front teeth in entirely different accidents when they were 3/4. We just left the gap and their adult tooth grew in eventually.

They will be fine with a missing tooth, and I doubt the dentist would do this for a baby tooth. Dentures require a lot of tolerance and can rub and be sore, not something a 3 year old would tolerate easily. And yes they would need impressions, can't see that working for a toddler.

Just wondering if, when the permanent teeth came in, whether there were any issues? Eg other milk teeth moving into the place of the empty tooth causing huge misalignment of the permanent teeth that did not sort itself out naturally?

My DDs are adults now and they have lovely teeth. No issues whatsoever.

Would a dentist even do this?? DS knocked his front tooth out when he was 4, we left the gap and the adult one grew in fine.

Milliways · 10/04/2023 21:21

My DS Had a front tooth removed at 3 (accidental damage made it unsaleable). The gap was left and did close a bit.
His adult teeth were crowded but braces sorted them, and half his class wore braces so nothing unusual in that.

Yep. My DD knocked out one of her front teeth when she was about three or four. I was relieved when the dentist said that she should have a denture to maintain the gap so that her adult tooth would grow in straight. I was really worried about her spending four years or so with only one front tooth!

She found it fine wearing the denture. It was taking the plate out to clean it that caused a problem. When the plate was taken out, the roof of her mouth clearly felt really odd to her, and she just wouldn't let me do it. Fortunately I had a friend (a nurse) who was happy to do it every evening, gradually getting her used to it until she'd let me do it, or take it out herself.

This was thirty years ago when health clinics had children's NHS dentists. But I wouldn't hesitate to pay for the same, if the same thing happened to my DGD. My daughter's adult tooth came through perfectly by the way.

Like I say, my three year old tolerated the whole process of impressions and fitting, fine. And she was quite a tantrumer in other situations. Children's dentists are good at this stuff.

I guess where people say that their kids needed braces subsequently after knocking out one of their baby teeth, they may have needed braces anyway irrespective of them losing their teeth as you say?

We were told when he was 3 that because it was a front tooth gone so young, he would need braces as his teeth would get crowded, but yes he may have needed them anyway. His sister needed more orthodontic treatment than him without ever having a dental accident.

Exact same thing just happened to my 2.5 yr old (daddy day care) I’m absolutely devastated. How would I go about getting a removable denture? Oh and he has both his front teeth missing. Absolutely kicking myself that I didn’t see it coming.

Mammatimesfour · 28/04/2024 19:38

This has just happened to my 2.5 year old daughter yesterday. I’m utterly devastated!! What did you end up doing?

Danice868 · 22/01/2025 22:20

My 3yo one of her front tooth is broken. I am heartbroken. Came across the pediatric denture option. Now I'm thinking to just leave it and let go and let God handle it.

Danice868 · 22/01/2025 22:21

I know how you feel. It will get better
