Yellow bile - should I phone NHS24?

DD is 4 (5 next month).

She started composing of a sore tummy at about 6pm at her football training, and didn't really join in.

When she got home she still said her tummy was sore and didn't want her bedtime milk (which she normally loves).

She was sleeping for 7.45 but up at 8 being very sick. Took her a while to get back to sleep but then woke up just after 9 being sick again.

We have her in the living room with us now but she's waking every 15mins or so to be sick. She's not able to keep any water down and it's bright yellow bile now that she's bringing up.

We live remotely, and last time this happened she was 1 and they flew her out in the plane ambulance to a bigger hospital and it turned out to be norovirus.

The only reference to bile on the internet is bright green, and to call a doctor/go to a&e but I can't see anything about yellow bile.

Should I phone now or wait to see how she is during the night??

If it's yellow it isn't bile. Bile is grass green.

I’m not a medical professional but yellow bile is usually what you bring up when your stomach is empty. The frequency of her being sick is what would worry me. It sounds like norovirus. Although when my kids had it the doctors didn’t do anything but hydrate them and wait for it to pass.

Phone now.

We had this with Norovirus just before Xmas. It was rotten, so sympathies! I made dilute squash for DD3 and got her to drink tiny little sips as often as possible. Some did eventually stay down.

Better to ring for advice than not imo.

I had a stomach bug last week and started puking yellow bile because my stomach was totally empty. Was horrible at the time but I'm back to normal now.

Oh and bleach everything. It's so contagious and you really don't want to get it. DH escaped but I caught it (while in first trimester too which was fun) and it was horrid.

Bile can be yellow or green and it can just mean her stomach is empty. Have you tried water on a teaspoon rather than sips, a sip can be too much fluid. Given her age I would call now for advice.

Has she been in contact with animals - especially lambs? Cripto sporidium (sorry about spelling - that's what it sounds like) is another possibility. Quite common in country areas, my grandson contracted it and was very ill, but it seems most doctors don't think of it so its worth suggesting.
It is easily diagnosed from a stool sample.
Poor little girl I hope she's soon better.

I wouldn’t but then didn’t when my 8 month old was bringing up bile with a stomach bug. I think it’s quite usual when you’re ill isn’t it?

if she seems really ill or dehydrated then I would take to the gp or out of hours gp tomorrow. But obviously go with your gut, mum knows best!

I have four kids who’ve had tummy bugs numerous times. Yellow bile is completely normal after stomach contents have all been expunged. I’d try ice lollies to keep some fluid down. Always works here! Hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

I would contact 111. Had similar with my child a couple of years old recently and we got send up to hospital over night for checks. Her temp was sky high too, which likely impacted the decision. They can do further checks you can do at home which will give indication whether it’s something to at needs medical help or not. I would definitely call in your circumstances if it’s not usual for your child. It is usual for ours as she often gets these high temps, can’t eat and vomits up yellow bile as she’s then queasy on empty stomach. Sometimes it only lasts a few hours and we don’t get checked out. Sometimes lasts longer or temp doesn’t come down and we always get her checked out. Sometimes sent straight home and sometimes in hospital for a while.
We find sucking ice cubes works better than sips of water. She’s still sick but last time she was hospitalised with it she showed no signs of dehydration or blood sugar level issues even though we lost count of the number of times she’d been sick that day and hadn’t eaten a thing for at least 24 hours.
whenever I start to wonder if I should get the kids checked out, I always do. Doctors always say they would rather see them as young children can go downhill quickly.

I get migraines and profuse vomiting. When my stomach is empty, I produce yellow liquid. Agree with ice lollies to hydrate and also sucking a travel sweet or a fruit pastille helps to get some sugar in and settles the stomach.Teaspoons of boiled, cooled lemonade help too - tip from HV for norovirus when DD was a baby.

Don't give her plain water, it will come straight back, she needs weak squash as the sugar will help her stomach absorb the fluids & ease the sickness.

Thanks everyone.

I phoned NHS24 and they advices, like some PPs, to give ice cubes instead of water for a while to try break the cycle.

She's still being sick every 5-15 mins 😥. Going to be a long night. We've moved her from the couch to our bed so we can try get some sleep too

Try her with a bite of plain biscuit or toast. Even if it doesn't stay down, it's less uncomfortable to puke if there's something in your stomach.

Travel sickness tablets might help stop the vomiting too, if you have any. It is a symptom and the viruses way of spreading so stopping it isn't harmful! (Sorry, seen to many posts about D&V being the body's way of clearing the infection when it's really just how it spreads!)

Lastly, you might want to look at appendicitis symptoms and keep an eye out for them. It can affect younger kids too unfortunately!

So she was sick frequently until 4.30 am.

Woke up at 6.45am as bright as a button 🙄

She's had an ice lolly and some water and they have stayed down. Meanwhile, me and DH are like zombies 🙈

Hope the rest of us manage to avoid it.
