Manuka Honey for chicken pox marks

Hi all,

Has anyone tried Manuka honey on their little ones chicken pox marks and has it worked?

My 2 year old daughter had severe chicken pox 7 weeks ago now and was covered in spots and blisters. All the ones on her body have filled in and whilst still red are starting to fade but the ones on her face have left the dreaded pox dents and despite trying alsorts from moisturiser, to massage to bio oil nothing seems to be helping.

Have read Manuka honey is good at building collagen and helping to repair and fill in pox marks and am willing to try anything possible to help lessen these marks. As you can see from the pic the poor little thing has been left with a lot. 😢

Any advice would be massively appreciated!

Thanks!

Does anyone have experience of using Manuka honey to treat scars?

Hello
i just wondered if you tried the manuka honey and if it helped at all? X

Hi there,

We’re trying it now and it’s hard to say whether it’s helping but overall the redness is reducing. I’m not sure if the scars themselves are particularly filling in but hopefully they will over time.

Its hard to know definitively what to do for the best treatment wise as there’s so many things out there but none specifically for dealing with the aftermath of chicken pox.

Hows your little one faring?

My DS had chicken pox about 2 weeks ago - some scans still intact but most have come off. He has some ‘holes’ on the top of his back, chest and a couple on the chin. It’s the holes that worry me the most as I know the redness will subside.
I have bought some cream - it’s called solution for scars - all natural and made on the UK. It says it helps chicken pox. I have also ordered some Manuka honey as I did read it helps with collagen. I only have a small white mark from chicken pox so I feel very naive for thinking he would come out unscathed. I’m kicking myself for not vaccinating x

I’m with you on the holes being the biggest concern. My daughter is a good 2.5 months now and there’s still a lot of holes despite it overall looking better. Hoping they gradually fade over time and in the meantime will carry on with what we’re doing.

We’ve got solution for scars too but I held off using it as it says it helps to reduce collagen production which is the opposite of what you want if trying to rebuild the skin.

With you on the vaccination front but had no idea it could be this bad. My son had it a few weeks prior and he’s pretty much unscathed.

Hmm, that’s interesting you say that about the cream as it’s marketed for chicken pox scars as well as others - I even emailed them specifically about this said now is the best time to start using it. I will email them again to check.
have you tried anything else? I read about vitamin e serum. I haven’t tried anything else yet. X

This is what they previously told me: If the dents are very recent it may help soften the tissues so they can even out
If they are long standing then probably won’t improve them

We’ve tried all sorts of things. From SFS to honey to a product called Murad Invisiscar.

Saw a private dermatologist and his advice was to just use a basic moisturiser like Aveeno.

Its honestly a bit of a minefield and despite there being lots online about treating the chicken pox rash and virus there is very little about how best to treat the aftermath of it if your little one is left with scars.

Did the dermatologist say they would ever fill in? I’m hopeful as realistically how many adults do you see with many chicken pox scars?? However I’m still a little worried….

DL77 · 18/06/2022 19:04

He said it was hard to say definitively that they would because everyone is different but that there would be a big improvement over the next 12-18 months whether we moisturised or just left them to their own devices. He also said age is a big factor in their favour as in the younger you are the better because the skin still has a lot of growing to do.

Im with you that it’s hard not to worry but whilst my daughters haven’t gone they look much better than they did 2 months ago.

Does anyone have any experience in successfully treating chicken pox scarring? If so, would love to hear what products/if any you used and how much the marks/dents improved.

Thanks!

My granddaughter had the most horrendous case of CP that I've ever seen. Really bad infected blisters everywhere. We didnt use anything specific but as she also has eczema we already use oilatum in the bath and aqueous cream daily. She hasn’t got a single scar anywhere now.

DL77 · 04/07/2022 21:15

Thanks for the reply and really glad to hear your granddaughter has fully recovered. Did she have any bad ones on her face too I assume? Do you mind me asking how long you used the cream for?

My daughter's body has healed pretty well but her face doesn't seem to be faring as well. 😢

@Soontobe60 oh my goodness, poor little thing! May I please ask how long ago did she have chicken pox? Also, when her skin was healing, did she have any marks / indents when the skin came off which then subsequently healed or did they heal perfectly in the first instance? Trying to ascertain if we should worry less about the current marks we have!
