Stinky groin creases!

Sorry folks but it’s not glamorous being a parent is it?!
DS2 is 4 months and I’ve just noticed that he has a rash in his groin creases and that it’s a bit whiffy down there. On one side there are even a few tiny splits in the skin.
From now on I’ll do daily baths with no product (he’s a bit bath averse so we were doing them less frequently) and nappy free time and make sure he’s really dry there at every change. I’ve put some sudacrem on for now.

Because of the smell I’m wondering about a fungal infection. Should I give it a couple of days to see if it clears up? Can I try an anti-fungal if not? We have both Daktarin and canestan in the medicine cupboard. Or do I need to take him to the GP first? Loathe to waste their time if they’re going to prescribe canesten anyway.

He doesn’t seem at all unwell or bothered by it.

Anyone had this? Thanks!

I’d just keep it extra clean and dry and use Sudocrem. If it gets worse see your G.P.
Kids are such a joy !!

This happened to my son. It cleared. We used bepanthen and changed him more frequently / nappy off time. Use cotton wool and water not wipes. It sorts itself quickly, don't worry. We still use A LOT of barrier cream, when they're teething their urine can be quite acidic.

My DD had this in her armpit fold when she was tiny. The HV sent us to the GP who prescribed a cream, I can't remember what it was but it wasn't canestan. It cleared it up quickly.
You could ask at a pharmacy but you might need to see a doctor as the smell means there's a bit of infection there.

keep it dry and clean.
gently use flannel & warm water at every nappy change.
you can use veg oil on a damp flannel to gently clean as well.
try to avoid wipes, they sting on broken skin.
bepanthen (and own brand versions) are great.

good luck!

I would definitely try the canesten, as it does sound fungal. Our paediatrician told me to try canesten as it wouldn't harm my baby if I suspected a nappy rash was fungal.

Hope that was the right advice, it certainly worked for us. (My baby was allergic to the fragrance in the prescribed fungal nappy rash cream.)

Thanks everyone - I’ll see how it goes. Hopefully we’ve caught it early and it will clear up just being kept clean and dry but otherwise I’ll seek some advice.

I wouldn't start putting vegetable oil or creams or anything else on incase is makes it worse.

I'd use cotton wool and warm water to keep the area clean at nappy changes and have a daily bath using unscented/sensitive baby soap to make sure it's really clean.
