8 year old blood in runny poo

Hello,
So I have booked a doctor's appointment for tomorrow but just to calm my internal panic, has anyone had this before? My son came home complaining of a slight tummy ache and then had diarrhea when he went to the toilet. No other symptoms, was starving and ate lots of rice, no fever, no more tummy ache. But just before bed he did some more runny poo and it had maybe a teaspoon of red blood mixed in... I'm hoping it's just the gastro...

If it’s bright red it could be small burst blood vessels in his bottom, can happen often. Definitely describe the brightness or darkness of the blood at the Drs. Hopefully all is ok

Thanks Lobatterylife. It was normal red colour I would say.. like a period? Does that count as bright red?

Yes that's counts.

Try not to worry, it could be quite innocent. You've done the best thing in booking an appointment, waiting for answers is the worst bit.

Does your son get frequent tummy aches or urgency OP? If so I would ask to the GP to get a stool test for calprotectin. It's a very quick and non-invasive test and if the calprotectin levels are raised they can investigate further.

Thanks Kat1953 I really hope it stops tomorrow. Its his birthday tomorrow as well Sad

Hi Biscuitsneeded. No in fact he is normally very regular and doesn't get tummy aches. I'll look it up anyway and see if it sounds familiar.

Bloody diarrhoea needs a sample going to the lab, just to make sure it isn't one of the unusual worrying bugs that need an eye keeping on.

Nocoolnamesleft. Yes, hopefully they will ask me to do that. I am not in England but this country has a good medical system
