Antibiotics- did I do the right thing?

My 2 year old has had antibiotics 3 times… once for bronchiolitis, once for a UTI and once for tonsillitis.

On Saturday eve he was randomly very sick (projectile- only happened once before) and had an instant high temp.

I took him to an out of hours GP on Sunday due to his high temp and was told to treat it as viral with calpol etc. That eve he was shaking with fever so the next day I saw another GP who said he has a bad throat infection and inflamed eardrum. He prescribed amoxicillin.

Yesterday lunchtime, whilst trying to get some food into DS, he started to shiver, look panicked, his nails turned purple/blue and his skin on his legs mottled. I called 999 and they came over and said his temp was 40 and that he needed extra support fighting the infection in hospital.

In hospital they gave ibuprofen in triage which took effect pretty quickly, temp went down and he became himself again… bouncing around the place laughing until his temp started up again.

We’ve been in a constant cycle in hospital of calpol/ibuprofen bringing down his temp for a few hours where he acts himself, but then he goes straight back to 40 degrees as they wear off.

I am petrified of sepsis and told the doctors that that was the reason I called 999 as to me, the symptoms he showed were extremely worrying. He was going limp and sleepy on me when I was on the phone.

The hospital believe this infection could still be viral but gave the choice of giving 2 broad-spectrum antibiotic injections today and tomorrow to cover anything underlying to be on the safe side.

I decided to go with that and typically immediately after, my sons temp became 36.5- the lowest its been since we got here… meaning he’s probably just getting over the infection himself meaning these injections are potentially pointless.

I feel devastated with myself that I may have put him through unnecessary antibiotic treatment. Did I overreact? I’m petrified that my decision to go ahead with the antibiotic injections could lead to antibiotic resistance later down the line and put him in danger???

I feel so, so upset. Any advice or ‘been there’s’ would be so appreciated. Feeling like I’ve done wrong by my little boy and like the worst, most selfish Mum ;(

It’s the bacteria, not the person, who becomes antibiotic resistant.

imagine if you hadn’t agreed to him having treatment and he became worse within a couple of hours, you would then regret him not having them.
the important thing is that he is improving, try to focus on that.

Bless you, that sounds so tough. Our lockdown baby (now toddler) has had similar, a number of really horrible infections which she’s taken ages to shake which our doctor said is because lockdown babies weren’t exposed to anything in their first 6 months / year.

you did the best thing for him at the time, you had no idea what was to blame for his illness and took medical advice.

dont beat yourself up, you did the right thing for him

So his temp went back up to 40 again and suddenly spots started to appear…. they’re thinking chicken pox. I cant believe how poorly he has been
