Foot pain - break / sprain

Morning!
My poor DD's (aged 9) bike fell on her foot on Friday.
She wasn't riding it at that moment, but paused holding it up chatting to someone on the path,
She immediately was in pain & couldn't bear weight on it - thankfully she was very close to home and my OH brought her home where we iced it.
Pain was still bad 20/30 mins on so my OH took her to the local minor injury unit where they confirmed tenderness in the 5th metatarsal and ordered X-ray.
2 images were taken and we were advised no fracture was seen and to ice several times a day, and give calpol/ibuprofen.
Two more days on she's still in constant pain and can't help bear any weight.

What my question is....
Is this normal if there's not a break for it to be so painful and to not being able to walk?

I’d take her back. Small child in pain. Things can - rarely - get missed. Is it definitely her foot causing the most pain, not her ankle?

PlateSpinnerJuggler · 17/04/2022 07:54

@Popskipiekin thanks for reply.

Hubby and I were discussing last night that if still in pain today that one of us should take her back or to a dif local a&e, I just don't want to waste anyones time as I know the hospitals are so stretched if this could be normal for a sprain or non break...
She's probably my most stoic / toughest child and I can see the pain on her face all day even when she's not actually complaining of pain but can't see any obvious swelling or bruising.

Pretty sure it's the foot not ankle

DC has had a fracture missed on initial x-ray before. Luckily the x-ray was reviewed by a consultant and we were called to go back for a cast but if we hadn't been called I would definitely have taken them back to be checked again if they were still in a lot of pain an non weight bearing. I hope she feels better soon.

You know your child. I have a very stoic child who - admittedly much younger - I took to a&e thinking he’d maybe broken a toe but he’d fractured his leg!
I’m not a medical professional, just answering as a random person. I think for me the thing is here you’re not reassured, you’re worried about her, it’s not getting better in the way you were advised (I’m assuming you were advised it would improve by such and such a day and now it hasn’t you’re concerned?).
You are right of course not to want to burden local services but I still feel for a child I’d want to know, and you have legitimate concerns. A GP can’t advise as they can’t X-ray so you do need to use a&E. I’d take a lot of food and activities and settle in….

Radiographer here - X rays aren't 100% on detecting fractures, especially children. However, if it is fractured but not detected it would be a small fracture, not displaced fracture and heal on its own. 5th mt fracture almost always has bruising. Other fractures are harder to guess and I can mostly guess a 5mt fracture before x-raying. Also, as sore as it is, it's only been 2/3 days. Lots of minor injuries are sore for a couple of weeks to heal, I'd give it 1-2 weeks if it was me.

PlateSpinnerJuggler · 17/04/2022 08:05

@GnomeyGnome thanks - think I just needed some confo that I'm not just being an over bearing mother lol!

Being the long BH weekend wonder how quickly the X-rays are getting reviewed.

She's still asleep but if she wakes still in pain and unable to bear weight on it then it's off we trot.

Also, an xray days after the event is more likely to pick up injury due to the new, healing bone growth being visable. They do this routinely for potential scaphoid fractures.

@Popskipiekin wow toe to leg!!!!

@Bramblecrumble21 thanks - nice to hear from an expert. If it were just sore that would be fine but she literally can't put any weight on it - does that seem normal to take 1-2 weeks? She's just hopping about the house and bumping with her bottom to get ip and down stairs.

@PlateSpinnerJuggler, 9 year olds are so different and some are overdramatic and some are all blasie, moving there injured limb about and actually have a significant fracture which shocks there parents. So I really couldn't say about the non wb a few days later.

I know this is an old post but in the same position with my DS. Had an x ray (with a trainee being overseen) it was in minor injuries. The nurse practitioner said they couldn't see a break. Said a lot of bruising. Sent home to give pain relief and ice it. It's so strange as when I have sprained my ankle the pain isn't localised (his is only one area). I guess what I'm asking is what happened with your daughter? I'm going to see how my DS is tomorrow. He's struggling to get around the house at the moment.
