Toddler hair loss

Hello,

Over the past 6 months I’ve noticed quite significant in my 2.5 year old sons hair on top. It’s quite long so fairly noticeable. It’s fairly thick on the back and sides but the top and front is very thin now- sort of like an ageing man.
I can’t see any bald spots per say nor think of any reason this would happen.
Gp hasn’t been at all useful but I’m going to push this week for answers as it’s getting quite bad now bless him.
Has anyone had anything similar?

My dc had hair loss (patches) looked like a very bad haircut. Dc also had other health concerns and I asked for blood tests. Was diagnosed with iron deficiency which lead to a referral and a diagnosis.
If your concerned push for investigations I'm so glad I did, my dc is so much healthier than they were.

Thanks for your reply
He has actually had his haemoglobin levels checked previously but they were within normal range- I might ask if they can be re-tested though.
I’ve just googled and he does have a few possible symptoms; hair loss, pale (although always has been), speech development delay.

It looks like he might have very small white bumps on his scalp, does he? Or any flakey skin on his scalp?

My son had exactly the same at this age, the GP was useless, I pushed for a paeds referral after the GP wanted to prescribe steroid cream and my son lost all the hair on the top of his head. It was diagnosed as a form of eczema by the Paediatrician. We did actually use a bit of the steroid cream but it's the worst thing to use as it can kill the hair follicles, luckily this didnt happen to us and the Paediatrician prescribed a shampoo that cleared it up.

Hi I am having the same problem with my nearly 3 year old. Iv been to the doctors that many times and just getting fobbed of it’s not normal for a child to loose this amount of hair. Waiting to see a specialist but they are saying we have got to wait months for an appointment to be booked and then it will be months for her to be soon so you’re talking next year. Don’t give up I’m getting on there nerves already

Can I ask for an update from those on this thread? We have a similar scenario (DC nearly two) and I’d like to know what others found it was, and what helped.

Does anybody have an update on this thread? I am experiencing similar with DD.

BerthaYoung · 13/10/2023 14:10

@Purtyburty How did you get on? I posted last year after first noticing some thinning around the back and sides in a noticeable band. It's still there, though the hair that is there has grown longer. We've had blood tests and all apparently fine though iron is on the low end of normal. GP says alopecia areata and we're waiting to see dermatologist in hospital. Weirdly I had patches of hair loss myself last year too so I don't know whether/how that's related, seems like an odd coincidence...

Also still curious to know if @Poppyboo231 and @Dawnl1 are still around and have anything to report. It's a worrying thing :(

Hi same thing happening to mum daughter, does anyone have updates please?

BerthaYoung · 02/07/2024 15:45

We’re still waiting to see the dermatologist unfortunately. Thankfully my daughter’s doesn’t seem to have gotten worse, but coverage is still much thinner around the hairline. Wishing you and your daughter all the best - it’s a scary prospect not knowing what’s wrong and whether it will get worse.

Poppyboo231 · 02/07/2024 17:28

Hi, @Lbee12345
after all his bloods were rechecked and everything was ruled as ‘normal’ we were discharged.
That was a couple of years ago now. My son’s hair is now completely normal now, albeit slightly thin but this runs in our family.
the only change I made was to stop shampooing his hair! I completely stopped using any product on his hair ( I was previously using Childs farm or similar ‘children’s’ Shampoos which are full of chemicals too strong for children’s hair) and miraculously all his grew back and is now healthy.
I still no longer shampoo his hair and it’s the thickest and healthiest it has ever been.
hope this helps!

How strange @Poppyboo231 ! But great news for you. It is awful how much crap is in kids products. Do you wash his hair at all now, with anything else?
