Is my 5 month old teething or should I be more concerned?

Hi,

I’m a FTM and my little boy has been screaming at the top of his lungs for long periods of time really genuinely upset and he is very hard to settle, he is usually a very happy little boy but he hasn’t smiled much or laughed the past couple of days, these are screams that I’ve never heard come from him before. He hast been sleeping very well (waking up for hours in the middle of the night with the screams and crying). He has been very clammy and sweaty, his temperature has been slightly raised (37.8) but nothing concerning. I’ve been putting it down to teething and the fact that it’s the first bit of hot weather he’s experienced in the UK. But I’m unsure as to whether I should call 111 or not as I don’t know whether it’s just teething and it can be this bad or if I should get him checked. I would usually book a doctors appointment but with it being bank holiday weekend they are shut until Tuesday, so if it is something more concerning I want to get him seen! I have given him a couple doses of calpol which seemed to help and have been using teething gel.

TIA x

Can't tell you what to do but I've always found nurofen works better for teething.

Sounds like he is feeling rubbish as 37.8 is not slightly elevated. Ply him with nurofen and calpol. At this stage I would say it's not 111 or doctor worthy. Only if the temperature gets really high and doesn't come down with the drugs.

Anbesol liquid for the gums also works.

Good luck. Baby Einstein on you tube or other hypnotic soothing TV might help too.

Ironically he has been pretty ok since I posted! Thank you both, spoken to a mummy friend and she has let me know how bad the teething can be. Just concerning when he’s not really a cryer and is usually very happy. Will get some nurofen and show him lots of hey bear sensory!!Smile

Teething can be horrible! Temperatures, rashes, runny poos.-

My only advice as that when it comes to
Doctors appointments/baby a&e etc, it really is when they temperature is way high and just won't come down or if they go listless and floppy. You can also do calpol/nurofen at the same time if it gets desperate. (I speak from many doctors trips convinced they had something terrible and it turns out to be one of the 100s of run of the mill bugs they pick-up!)
