4yo can't keep water down

Hi all,

My 2 and 4 year old have both caught a bug at a party at the weekend (several kids that attended have this). They have both formatted a few times since about 3 pm. My four-year-old is much worse, she has vomited more times and isn't even keeping water down. She is very pale and tired now and has gone to sleep. Before she went to sleep she had a sip of water…… Woke up 20 minutes later to pick up the sip of water and has gone back to sleep. Should I be waking her up to take some sips of water throughout the night? She has literally nothing in her stomach, I'm worried she will get dehydrated. I did try her with an ice pop , she had a mouthful and immediately puked that up too.

Thanks

Formatted = vomited .

bloodywhitecat · 11/04/2022 22:24

Have you tried 5mls on a teaspoon (or in a syringe if you have one) every 15 minutes? Sips are often too big so come back up again.

hassletassle · 11/04/2022 22:34

Thank you. I haven't , I will.

We had a terrible vomiting bug last October, we all had it for about 2 days but my 5 year old couldn't shake it off. She was vomiting and had diarrhoea none stop for over a week. She ended up very weak and poorly and eventually had to go to a+e. To be honest all they did was make her drink a liquid and wee. She somehow over 3 or 4 hours managed it before they allowed her home for the puking to start all over again. They just said you need to carry on giving tiny sips constantly and bits of food too (our daughter hadn't eaten in nearly a week, we did try to feed her but it was bouncing back up) they said hopefully a bit stays down even if they are sick.

hassletassle · 11/04/2022 22:49

Should she be drinking something other than water?

CrabbyCat · 11/04/2022 22:50

If you have a calpol syringe it can be easier, try 2.5 ml every 5 min and then if a few of those stay down try 5 ml every 5 min. I found it helped letting DS hold my phone with the timer, they can get upset at you not letting them have more and I found giving him control of the timer seemed to help. If she's sleeping now I'd let her sleep though, she'll probably wake as ill again / thirsty in a few hours.

DD ended up admitted into hospital with a vomiting bug at 18 months. We spent 3 hours trying to syringe diarolyte in every 5 min, it wasn't until she vomited it all back up they finally agreed she needed admitting. (Even then all they did was an IV drip to get fluids in, they apparently don't give anti sickness meds).

As long as she is keeping at least some of the water down I'd try and stay at home, it's a lot easier for you and them than A&E. It can take a long time for them to settle completely. It's hard to get them to take diarolyte unless they are so sick they are completely out of it, once water was mostly staying down mine accepted 1 hula hoop every 10 min though to try and get at least some salts / sugars back into them.

Good luck, it's horrible when they keep being sick.

Whenever my three have sickness bugs I syringe flat warm lemonade in tiny amounts
For some reason they can keep this down
Water comes straight back up

Coffeesnob11 · 11/04/2022 23:01

My 3 year old and I both had this recently. I encouraged him to drink slowly in the day even if he was being sick a lot. At night I let him sleep in between sickness. We both recovered okay.

Hugasauras · 11/04/2022 23:04

Ah DD3 had Noro before Xmas and she was the same. Teeny tiny sips whenever she can manage. It will probably mostly come up again but just keep on. We used very diluted full sugar squash to encourage DD to keep sipping at it and get some energy source in her. For older kids, flat coke or similar can be good.

Hugasauras · 11/04/2022 23:06

Oh and I caught it from her and it was horrible so make sure you are bleaching and sanitising whenever you can!

indecisivewoman81 · 11/04/2022 23:06

My GP always told me to try flat lemonade on the children when they were being that sick as the sugar will help them.

Okeydoky · 11/04/2022 23:17

Teeny tiny amounts of watered down apple juice, 5ml every 5 minutes was what I was advised to do by our GP recently and it really worked.

Apparently there have been studies that confirm it works as well as rehydration fluids.

CircusBaby · 11/04/2022 23:19

2yo had it last week, he couldn't keep water down but I had some 7up and let it go flat, he managed to keep sips of that down. And I always use flat cola for the older ones, it replenishes lost sugars and they keep it down whereas water comes back up.

Okeydoky · 11/04/2022 23:21

The problem with the flat fizzy drinks is that very few of them actually have sugar in them anymore, which is what perks them up. Watered down apple juice achieves the same thing.

CircusBaby · 11/04/2022 23:25

Depends. I don't buy diet or zero drinks, always regular. So they do actually have sugar in. Diet stuff is foul and full of nasties.

hassletassle · 12/04/2022 08:42

Thank you all, I'll get husband to grab some apple juice this morning. We don't have any flat lemonade sadly. The vomiting stopped during the night and they both did wake up a few times asking for sips of water, so I didn't need to wake them. I think i slept about 2 hours max, fun times! At least the violent puking has stopped, my 4 year old is no longer pale and lethargic either.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/04/2022 08:46

Rehydration sachets are fantastic given with a syringe.

Keep up with fluids ,even if she is vomiting she will still be absorbing some.

I wouldn't wake her up to drink.

endofthelinefinally · 12/04/2022 08:47

Fruit ice lollies. Or make ice cubes with dioralyte with some fruit squash added. OR, even cheaper, fruit squash with a tablespoonful of sugar and a teaspoon of salt to a pint of water, make lollies or cubes. It is a pity that squash is full of artificial sweeteners now because I think it can upset tummies.

hassletassle · 12/04/2022 11:29

So this morning my four-year-old is much brighter and keeps asking for food, she's having watered down apple juice, ice lollies and dry foods only, with quite big gaps in between any foods because I want to check it stays down! My two-year-old, who was not so bad last night, has been sick again this morning and won't eat. She is just sipping on the watered-down apple juice. Poor little thing. Very lethargic. At least the double projectile vomiting has stopped.
