My sons got a big operation coming up and looking at 12 week starting in hospital. What do I need to take? Does he need slippers? A dressing gown? Please help out.

Pjs, dressing gown, slippers all good. Depending on length of stay/surgery normal comfy clothing so they can get dressed if they want. Don’t have to stay in pjs especially on a long stay. Easy access to dress clothes (also dependant on the surgery). Plenty of underwear/socks
Toiletries/towel. Hospital can provide some very basics. Nicer to have your own.
Activities to keep busy: iPad/phone/switch etc and chargers too. Any other things he is interested in other than tech maybe books, puzzles, artwork etc.
Snacks: for you both if you are staying or another parent, the ward may have a fridge/parents area where you can keep things or because of covid it may be closed. A twelve week stay is pretty long though so you can always bring more things in anyway ad hoc . Also drinks the hospital provides basic but any favourites may be useful and hospital shops/cafes are expensive.
Check about parking some are free for kids admissions, some you can get a monthly pass cheaper.
Home comforts maybe a pillow/blanket if the hospital policies allow.
Headphones/eye masks/ear plugs if on a noisy ward.

Pain relief like paracetamol for anyone staying with him easy to get headaches from the dry hot hospital wards. Hospital will provide it for your son but not accompanying family.

Slippers, dressing gown, maybe non-slippery flip flops for the shower if it's a minging NHS shared one. Ear plugs, earphones to listen to music, books, easy card games, cuddly toy if he has one. Wipes (some surfaces are not clean even in covid times!), lip balm, hand gel, toiletries bag obviously. Straws to help him drink if sitting up is difficult. Comfy pyjamas/t shirts and joggers. Water bottle to drink from can be easier to keep topping up than small plastic cups. Screens, phone, chargers. Small snacks.
They usually have a person in charge of play on paediatric wards so my son spent most of the time on a Nintendo switch that they brought around.

Have a look at Pyjama Fairies for hospital PJs.
