If your child had chicken pox as a baby

Came on here to ask a CP question and can't believe how many threads there are! Definitely the illness of the moment.

Anyway DS (4) has it. He has a 6 month old sister and based on the other thread it seems likely she will get it too.

Does anyone have stories of their under 1 having chicken pox? I'm so worried about my baby. I googled and the first 2 stories I read were about a 6 month old that had to be hospitalised and tube fed for a month and another who ended up with encephalitis and never recovered ;(

Would love to read better experiences to calm myself down a bit. Thank you!

Mine had it at a similar age and was fine but due to passive immunity, didn’t build up enough immunity to prevent him getting it again when a bit older.

When my nearly 3 year old had it, my 3 month old didn't catch it. We were on holiday and sleeping all in one room. So you may be worrying for nothing.

I had it as a small baby, caught from a sibling, and my parents say it was really mild. I think they were right as I caught it again at 13 (from another siblibg!)

Fingers crossed that if your baby does catch it, it will be a mild case and all will be well.

DD had it aged 3 months. She's now 22 and definitely no after effects!

DS got chicken pox at 9 months. He was covered with scabs, I was very careful to ensure the ones in the nappy area didn't get infected. He was a bit unsettled, but ok apart from that. He is now an adult and has not had chicken pox again.

One of my children had it at 6 weeks old. He had a very mild dose and has never had it again despite plenty of exposure from subsequent siblings both of whom had it twice!

Youngest DD had a mild case when she was 10 months- a few spots and a bit clingy/whinge/tired but absolutely nothing compared to when I had it as an adult!! She did get it again as an older toddler but again, mildly.

One of my sons had it at ten weeks, caught from his older brother (aged 2). Everyone said the younger one wouldn't get it due to still having my immunity. He got it. Only effects are a couple of scars on the back of his neck - he is now 20.

Mine had it at 8 months old and he was fine , didn't bother him at all

hiredandsqueak · 12/04/2022 21:09

My dd had it within days of being born, ds2 was getting over it and exh came down with it the day she was born (he was ill in bed) Dd has one scar, it was the first spot that appeared on her knee, she had fewer than ten spots altogether as she obviously had immunity from me. She wasn't ill at all but obviously had enough of a dose to give her immunity.

DS had it as a baby - around 6 mo iir. He was fine - no marks on face but he did get quite a lot of blisters in his hair and also round the bottom. Just go to the dr for some antibiotic cream (too long ago to remember exactly, but I got something stronger than sudocreme) if this happens as obviously it's like extra painful nappy rash & you don't want them to get infected. Hopefully that won't happen!

DS is 17 now - no harm done & he doesn't remember! He did get shingles aged about 6/7 and gave chicken pox to his younger sister as they were sharing a bath - I thought it was a scrape mark from rugby on his back until the blisters appeared, by which point it was too late!
