13mo DD suddenly woken with a really honking chesty cough

And she sounds chesty when she breathes

No other symptoms at all, she's been in a good mood today

What could it be? She's fallen back to sleep but I am stressing

She doesn't go to nursery but I take her to a baby class once a week

Is it a barking cough? Croup has a very distinctive sound and tends to be worse at night. If you Google it, you can hear examples of what it sounds like. Could just as well be another type of cough though. Is it persistent? Does she have a temperature?

It does sound like croup. If it is, take her out in the cold air or near an open window if she starts to bark again. Calpol for any temperature and be prepared for massive improvement in the day time and a potential crash the next night.

Oh yes and don't bother with steam. It's a myth that steamy bathrooms help because it's not mucus. You need the cold to open up the airways. Veteran of much much croup here !

Hope she feels better soon.

@Worriedmum40284 @Jayneisagirlsname

She didn't have a temperature but she has woken up almost her normal self, she has a bit of a cough but nothing like last night!

It's really odd, it does sound like croup when I listen to the coughs online but she has no other cold symptoms

We have a wedding this weekend which we have a long journey to travel to Friday-Sunday and there will be other babies there. I don't know what to do because I don't want to infect any others but also would feel terrible missing the wedding

Same experience as @Jayneisagirlsname - my son would bounce back in the day and start coughing again during the night. Also second cold air. He normally recovered fairly quickly but did have to go into A&E once for a steroid solution which was like magic and made it disappear instantly!

From what I've read, it's contagious during the first few days or until temp has gone. My nursery only ask you to keep them at home whilst they feel poorly, not a set number of days as such. Fingers crossed she bounces back by the weekend.
