How often does your toddler go for a wee?

My little boy is 3, we've recently had a string of infections and he got over the latest one a week ago.
So far today he has been for a wee 12 times from about 9.30 this morning (he wears a pull up over night). He woke up last night crying for a drink a couple of times (gave water) and as i'd noticed an increase yesterday I thought i would keep track today. He's always liked a drink, but notices he's gone through more in the last couple of days.
Now, I know what this screams to me, however I have home urine dipstick tests (my husband uses- not for diabetes) and there is no glucose in his urine.
So i suppose my question is, is this just normal for him? Or is there anything else that could be causing it?
Do your toddlers wee constantly even if they drink a lot?

thanks

How worrying for you. I can't tell you if it's normal or not but just for comparison my 3 year old probably only goes about 5 or 6 times a day. He does drink a fair bit too. More than once an hour sounds quite a lot to me, maybe it's a urine infection?

Wow that's a big difference then isn't it! We're on 16 times today so far 😥
Fine otherwise doesn't say it hurts or anything. The urine dipstick I did was completely fine so I'm just thinking I'll burden the Gp's when they're only gonna do the same little dip test.

Is he in pain at all? Sounds maybe like a UTI? I know less common in boys. I would guess a GP would test for that too?

Sorry, you've said not in pain. My daughter 2.5yo would probably pee 5-6 times a day too, maybe more if she'd drank lots of fluids.

I'd want a urine sample to check for infection, and a finger prick to check blood sugar. If those are okay, then I'd relax quite a bit. How much is he actually drinking in 24 hours?

spineythespinosaurus · 01/04/2022 19:54

I think he's had about 1.5 litres today, his bottle is 350ml and I think I've filled it 4 times maybe.
He woke up and actually came downstairs last night crying for a drink at about 11pm.
I sometimes try to put him off, so say yes I'll fill it up now thinking he'll forget but he doesn't.

No pain, fine in himself really I think. He's eating a lot more at the moment (he's always been a rubbish eater and is only quite small for his age)
So maybe he's thirsty cos of that.

But the urine dipstick is definitely fine, and it's the same as what they would do in the gp's.

The urine dipstick you did was to check for glucose or infection too? When my niece had a UTI her first symptoms were vomiting and a fever and that was a few days down the line, she seemed to bypass all the more traditional symptoms so you never know!
Also when I was pregnant they sometimes sent the urine sample off even if the dipstick came back fine, as there's only so much the dipstick can pick up. So I definitely don't think you'd be wasting anyone's time.Hope your LO feels better soon!

It's a full strip so tests for infection too.
You're right tho, I should really get him seen seeing as the amount of times is very abnormal.
