Juvenile Spring Eruption?

Does anyone have experience of this at all? 10YO DS has white lumps/spots on his outer ear and Google isn't helping much. I've come across a description of Juvenile Spring Eruption which seems to be a possibility.
Has anyone experienced this or have any other suggestions? He says it doesn't hurt so don't really want to see a GP unless necessary

Hi, yes that looks like JSE, my son used to get it every year, as soon as the weather got a bit warmer. Lasted a couple of weeks then settled down.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/03/2022 22:03

Thanks for replying. I've never heard of this before today and DS has never had it before. Would you say I need to do anything if it isn't bothering him, or just wait and see?

My son had this last year when he was 9. Apparently it happens when it's quite cold but very sunny, and the skin on extremities like ears isn't "switched on" to protect from UV light because the weather is still cold. My DS's ears looked a lot worse than yours, really big blisters, but they did develop over several days. We never went to the doctor Blush and I was convinced he would have terrible scarring but it all eventually disappeared with no trace. It was very strange!

Looks like what I get but is PLE, didn't know there was a junior version!

nearlyspringyay · 29/03/2022 22:05

Ah, ignore me, didn't realise this just affects ears. Mine is in arms and chest.

Ducksurprise · 29/03/2022 22:05

My boy has this, again doesn't hurt so we've never done anything about it. Maybe I should have

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/03/2022 22:07

DS1 used to get that.
His ears got hot and itchy with those raised white bumps.
I used to give him a dose of antihistamine which did seem to help.
He’s 16 now and you’ve just reminded me that he’s not had it for probably the last 3 years.

Epictantrum · 29/03/2022 22:09

I don't think you need to do anything about it.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/03/2022 22:09

I'm glad to read of others with this experience, its very odd and seems to have sprung out of nowhere. I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and not worry unless it starts to bother him.

My kids used to get that, I'd orgotten all about it!
I got bad PLE on my legs the first time i wore shorts during the lovely spring in the first lockdown, had to take anti histamines

Quppity · 29/03/2022 22:38

Yes my son has had that. Cold weather and sun brings it out. Wearing a hat when outside prevents it. He says it’s very sore though.

StarbucksQueen1 · 01/05/2024 21:46

Glad I found this as my sons is awful! I forgot he got it last year. Must put sun cream on his little ears but not sure that will stop it? His is very itchy. A hat doesn’t help as doesn’t cover his ears!!

Get an e consult. After reading in 2022 that I posted we hadn't been to doc, we had to go last year as it got really bad. Not just lumpy but purple and almost bloated.

Prescribed a steroid cream which really helped. Also takes anti histamine and keeps covered where possible.

Thanks so much for that! I am concerned given the fact it hasn’t even been sunny yet!

Ducksurprise · 02/05/2024 07:20

It hasn't and my lad has the same issues again, he thinks it is temp changes that really affect it, so we've had a couple of warm days and then a few very cold and then his ears have reacted.

Once summer comes and it is actually sunny it always clears up.

Cgriffiths93 · 25/04/2025 17:33

My 8 year old gets it all year especially if the sun is out, he’s had it spread to his limbs to. We normally give him an antihistamine and it goes after it
