HELP - concussion and 111 busy

Trying to get through to 111 but line busy up to 30 mins.
Stepson bumped his head in bed (wooden frame, flung himself back trying to hit the pillow but missed). No tears at the time, wobbly bottom lip but went off to sleep no issues, he's had similar bumps (non-serious, brushes it off and fine in 2 mins) before and no problems.
He's been teary for a couple hours but thought it was just poor sleep, went back and tucked him in each time.
DH just went up and gave DSS a cuddle, and he was hugely sick.
Could he be concussed? There's no bump or bruise where his head hit the bed frame, is there anything we can do to check while waiting to get through to 111?

NHS advice is go to a and e if vomited

Also, not to alarm you, but bumps and bruises can be a good thing as otherwise damage could be going 'in' rather then out. I would take to Casualty for proper assessment. i can guarantee that's what 111 will tell you anyway!

Hercisback · 28/03/2022 21:29

Get him to A&E quickly. He's definitely not well.

elizzza · 28/03/2022 21:33

Had almost exactly this last week with my 2 year old - 111 told me to take him to A&E immediately. They can’t do any more than ask you a pre-set list of questions and then they’ll tell you to take him to the hospital, so just take him now.

Sorry, but this is fundamentally not true. The skull is bone and a bruise (or lack of bruise) on the scalp has absolutely no correlation with trauma to the brain.

But yes, do get him checked if you are at all worried

JurassicPerks · 28/03/2022 21:45

Stop waiting for 111. Go to A&E. We had blue lights when it was DS1 in a similar situation, and were kept in for 18 hrs.
Be prepared to stay overnight.

nocoolnamesleft · 28/03/2022 21:47

That would count as "needs observation" but doesn't yet hit the threshold for a scan. I'd take him to A&E.

hulahoopqueen · 28/03/2022 23:18

Thank you all - now sitting in car park while DH is with DSS in A&E.

Hope he's ok, you made the right decision.

flyingdream · 28/03/2022 23:29

Yeah I went to a and e too. It's better to get it checked out.

111 is pathetic. Spoke to someone after 45 mins. Got a callback after 2 hours saying someone will call me in 10-15 mins to book an appointment. It's been over and hour and no ones called me!

Whiskersonkittens21 · 28/03/2022 23:32

Hope DSS is ok x

hulahoopqueen · 29/03/2022 00:24

@flyingdream I was pacing the whole time I was waiting - DSS was talking and clearly focused but I couldn't help but think, FFS he might have concussion, stop feeding me all the Covid warning bumph!!
Still waiting in car. DSS taking small amounts of water (10ml every 10 mins, as directed by nurse) but it's not staying down. Waiting to hear the plan

Good luck, op, thinking of you

alexdgr8 · 29/03/2022 00:34

what age is he.
well done for acting sensibly and taking him to A&E.
hope he's ok, and you can all rest soon.

ThelmaDinkley · 29/03/2022 01:04

Glad he’s being seen to.

Panda8383 · 29/03/2022 04:23

Hope dss is doing ok 🤞🏻

Planetbippop · 29/03/2022 04:27

How worrying, hope DSS is ok x

hulahoopqueen · 29/03/2022 09:40

Out of a&e at 4am and all ok - they couldn't give it a definite yes or no to concussion but they said we did absolutely the right thing in bringing him in, which was just what we needed to hear. He's now having a lie in, poor lamb

Glad everything all ok, it’s a worrying time and always trust your instinct with your children x
