Chickenpox

Hi everyone I need some advice please. My dd 5 came out in a couple of spots Wednesday night followed by vomiting early hours. Thursday morning more spots appeared and more vomiting and high tempreture. I rang the doctor and explained the symptoms and he said chickenpox. I rang the school to let them know and they've said there's been a few cases in her class and to keep her off for 5 days. Problem I have is she has a severe case of them, there isn't a part of her body that isn't covered. Her eyes, inside her mouth everywhere. Some are crusting over, alot are still blistered and she has more appearing. She'd be due back in school Tuesday but I can't see how they'd all crust over by then with the amount she has. Has anyone else dc had bad chickenpox and if so how long did it take for them all to crust over? Thankyou.

Poor thing. With DD1 it was 5 days from appearing but new ones kept appearing every day for about 4 days.

EmpressCixi · 20/03/2022 15:29

Your DD must be feeling very poorly. It sounds like a severe case to me,
I’d ring the GP back for advice as it’s a severe case with spots inside her mouth. Chicken pox can be serious for some children.
She won’t be well enough for school on Tuesday.

Thankyou. I've just rang 111 they will get someone to call back within 6 hours. They said they don't think any walk I'm centre's will see her as its a contagious virus but if anything changes to ring back. She seems OK in herself one minute then a bit off the next. Her tempreture has been ok today but those eye ones I think are concerning. If anything changes I will be ringing them straight back. It's hard to know what to do as the ones that are blistered are sore.

I'm glad you're on a list for a callback. It sounds like she probably does need to be seen, there will be some arrangement that will allow her to be assessed away from other potentially vulnerable patients. Though I guess they might also be prepared to discuss stuff via photos, it's not quite the same.

Is she drinking ok?

germsandcoffee · 20/03/2022 16:16

It took both my kids 9 days until their spots crusted over and kept away from school for the full nine days x

Angelbaby101 · 20/03/2022 16:19

Yes she's drinking OK. I think she's over the worse regarding tempreture, vomiting but I've just never seen so many spots on a child. Some blister then scan then more appear. She's doing so well not to scratch them.

You can get gel/mossue spray which really helps. We used virasooth but poxocillin is also supposed to be really good.

GeneLovesJezebel · 20/03/2022 16:21

I had it bad when I was little, I’m my mouth/ears etc. I believe I was off school for getting towards six weeks.

octoegg · 20/03/2022 16:26

My ds (8yo) took 2 weeks from onset of symptoms to fully scab over. It started just before new year so he had a week and a half off school. You can still see where they were now, it's taken ages for his to fade. His sibling got them two weeks later and you can't see his at all now, other than the odd one that left a scar.

Angelbaby101 · 20/03/2022 17:42

Thankyou all. No call back yet. I think she'll be off all this week. Her eye is really sore.
@duracellbunnywannabe thankyou ill look into those.
Some of the lesions look so sore. She's even got them on the soles of her feet bless her

My 9yo wad pretty ill with chicken pox last week. Took 8 days to scab over. High temp constantly until the calpol kicked in for 5 days. His temperature was 39.8 and just below at times. It floored him. He had really bad tummy ache, and spots in his mouth, down his throat which were agony for him...luckily only really bad for one night. He had quite a lot of spots but did well not scratching them despite not wanting the calamine lotion...he tried it and hated it. People kept telling me they should be scabbed over by now Hmm. Hope your little one is feeling better soon. Keep her home until she is ready flowers Flowers

Dinoteeth · 21/03/2022 00:35

Have you tried piriton?
Don't use ibuprofen it makes chicken pox worse.

I thought 7 days was more average to be non infectious with Chicken Pox but I guess it depends on the child.

mrsfollowill · 21/03/2022 00:45

Try Eurax cream - it was a lifesaver when DS (and then me!) had CP, He had a temp/chills for around 5 days and emerging spots everywhere. I came out in it 3 weeks later and was in bed for a week - so, so ill- like having the worst flu ever plus 100's of spots .I lost a stone in 2 weeks as could not eat (bonus!) DS told me calamine made it feel worse - more itchy and not soothing at all. You just have to ride it out I suppose.

Angelbaby101 · 21/03/2022 06:27

Thankyou all for your replies they've been really helpful. I've given piriton and calpol. She had the lotion on for 2 days but refuses it now as its so cold and at the moment she's hot one minute cold the next. The doctor has only just rang me (14 hours later) they think she might have a secondary infection in the eye. She keeps telling me her brain hurts bless her, she was in tears when she kept with dad as I have to stay here for ds to go to school. I'm going to ring the school when it opens because I feel they are putting pressure on me to send her because she's had a week off for covid in December and then got norovirus so was off another week for that. Even if the scabs formed and there were no more blisters I couldn't send her the way she's feeling. It hurts her to out shoes on because of the blisters, her eye is so swollen and she's just generally not well at all. I'm hoping the doctor gives her something for the eye but it will certainly be a mission getting it in her eye.

My son was off for 2 weeks with it. One of his ear pox got infected. He was off with the pox for a week and then the infection hit him really hard.
I am a teacher and I say keep her off until she is well enough and scabbed over. We just had a chicken pox outbreak and it was relentless ! I hope she feels better really soon.

SonicBroom · 21/03/2022 06:32

School will be fine, I really wouldn’t worry about them. They don’t want children in when they’re unwell. Perhaps you could ask for some English / maths sheets to do together when she’d feeling up to it during the day so as not to fall too far behind?

Angelbaby101 · 21/03/2022 07:51

Just got back and they've given her antibiotics as they said cream won't work. She's checked her over and said some of them are quite nasty and she does have a bad case. The antibiotics need to be taken 4 times a day so hopefully they work. They told me to keep her off school for the rest of the week. Hopefully the antibiotics work for her.
