Nursery and constant sniffles

Hi all!

Our 16 months old girl started going to the Nursery few months ago, Jan/2022. Since then, not surprisingly, we've been plagued with all sorts of illness related issues. Amongst those, COVID.

One thing that concerns me though is that in the last 3 months, I don't think there's been more than 1 week where she hasn't been congested. She gets better for a few days, and then it comes back. She now has had a cough for more than a month. It gets slightly better but never goes away.

We've been to GP several times and they say she could be just getting reinfected with different bugs since now she's being more exposed to things at the nursery. Tell us the old "wait and assess". And of course we always hear of stories when kids start going to the nursery.

But still, we're puzzled. Is it supposed to be this bad? In the last 3 months she hasn't been completely healthy for more than a week.

I should say, even though she gets runny nose, coughing, She had very little fever in different occasions. During the course of 5 to 10 days together. Overall the episodes haven't been that bad, even when she had fever she was eating and playing normally. (even when it was COVID).

Other than the constant nose wiping, her sleep is not great when she's congested and we are completely exhausted.

In summary, from your experiences, is this common?

Best

Yes, sorry to say this is normal! And very hard work! Should hopefully ease off a bit over time but the first few months are relentless! X

Yep, completely normal, it really is that bad for most people. This is a particularly terrible time as well for things going round now that covid restrictions have ended. My eldest is nearly 4 and doesn't catch stuff as often now yet in the last 3 weeks she has had a D n V bug that she ended up having to go to hospital with for antisickness meds and fluids, a short lived milder vomiting bug, and now has a cold that we have all caught from her too! Poor thing. Also, post-viral coughs can actually go on for months sometimes and it doesn't mean that anything is 'wrong'.

FelicityPike · 18/03/2022 14:14

100% normal.
I would actually expect it to be worse.
Chicken pox, hand foot & mouth, conjunctivitis, sick bugs, ‘flu, Covid, amount other general “virus” type illnesses.
Good luck!

In the same boat OP so I feel your pain.

My 1yo is in two childcare settings and since just before Xmas we've had HFMD, tonsillitis, the worlds longest congested cold and now D&V. She hasn't been "normal" for three months either. And majority of the time I catch it too. It's been shit. And terrible for managing work. We are just waiting for the chicken pox to turn up that's been rife recently and then I'm hoping we've had the lot and things will settle down.

Normal. At least when she starts school she should be mostly ok!

I am so glad I have found this post. My little girl (16 months) has had a cough for 4 weeks now and it’s not getting any better. I have tested for covid and always negative but constant runny nose and cough which I can tell she brings things up but doesn’t understand to spit it out bless her. Her sleep has been a nightmare as it’s worse when she is laying down for a period of time so had her in with me which worries me she will get use to it. Also I know her molars are coming through! This is worse than the newborn phase as I feel so sorry for them and all the bugs. My little girls isn’t in nursery but with grandparents and goes to play groups etc. anyone got any suggestions on how to help them with their coughs? Eating seems to trigger my little girl x

I think this is normal!

We had the same when my DD started nursery and it went on for ages. I went to docs constantly and got referred to ENT, they gave us very general nose drops. Eventually she just got better at dealing with colds. Not she'll just have a snotty nose and a cough but not be so unwell. I assume it's just immune system finally getting used to it! (She's 2 next month).

I know it sucks but try not to worry!! Hopefully won't be too long until she's fighting them off better xx

@killwithkindness thank you - so hard to see them coughing and you can’t help x
