Covid and sickness bug - WWYD

Dropped DD off this morning and there was a sign advising that another child (in DD's group) tested positive for covid last night. Picked her up tonight and there was a sign saying they had D&V at nursery today.

Problem is that we had family supposed to come to stay for the weekend from tomorrow night. What would you do?

They prepaid a fair bit for their travel (non refundable) but also have a day out at a nearby attraction planned so wouldn't be coming just for us.

Both family member and I are slightly germophobic so not sure if most people would just carry on as normal and we're over the top considering cancelling completely? (or at least booking them into a hotel rather than stay with us in case DD comes down with something)

What do you think? Such a tough time for my anxiety and really gutted as after all the lockdowns I was looking forward to them coming so much. Such bad timing!

If your DD isn’t actually sick, I would carry on.

Tell your visitor, if they are a bit nervous. Maybe do a LFT test.

Inform your guests and let them choose.

Nurserygerms · 16/03/2022 19:58

I've informed them and they're not sure either. They would also prefer me to keep her off nursery for the rest of the week to limit the chance of her catching something. It would be logistically a bit of a nightmare but could just about make it work. Would you keep her off in this case?

Realistically I know there has been covid and sickness bugs at nursery before and DD has been fine, so good to hear others would just carry on. It helps me de-dramatise!

Unreasonably I'm not so worried about covid but more the D&V as I have a mild fear of vomiting. So the thought of it happening with guests in the house sends my heart racing!

IMO that is a ridiculous request. Presumably she’s in nursery when you’re at work? If they don’t want to catch it, they should stay away.

That said, I also have emetophobia and so if I was your family member I’d be steering clear. I’m aware that might be considered an overreaction by most people though.

Not quite your question, but the main symptom of covid in my son's nursery class has been vomiting.

I guess it depends how much you want to see this family. If you desperately want to see them, then maybe keep her off. Otherwise, test before they come, but then you'll obvs have to cancel if positive. Of course, she could already have it anyway!

mynameiscalypso · 16/03/2022 20:04

I don't know if this makes things better or worse but in the last Covid outbreak at DS' nursery, they said the main (and, in most cases, only) symptom for the children was D&V.

Nurserygerms · 16/03/2022 20:51

@SickAndTiredAgain no I should have said, I'm not working but am looking after a BF baby that doesn't nap independently and have two appointments tomorrow too, so a bit of a hassle.

@DoobryWhatsit @mynameiscalypso that does make it better actually as it would mean we only have one virus to dodge, not two! That was my first thought when I saw the sign tonight actually, as I had read that Covid can present with D&V in children.

Definitely will be testing with LFT to give us peace of mind if they do come, but worried that sickness bugs come with no warning, but yes @doobrywhatsit she may have caught it already anyway so might as well keep her in nursery!

Well DH tested positive this morning so that's that! It's probably been going around nursery a while and this is what DD's runny nose was last weekend. Everytime I've tried to see family since the beginning of the pandemic this has happened, so annoying :(. Hopefully the baby and I stay covid-free.
