Paracetamol overdose 2 year old

Mrspike888 · 15/03/2022 11:43

Please help! I have accidentally mixed up my kids doses of paracetamol and gave my 2 year old 500mg of paracetamol in stead of my 4 year old. I have made her throw up as best I can to try and get it out of her system a few minutes after giving it to her and realising my mistake but I'm panicking! Please can anyone help? Will she be OK if I don't give her anything else for the rest of the day? We are isolating due to Covid so I couldn't leave the house to get calpol so I gave her crushed paracetamol in a spoonful of jam but gave her too much! HELP!

999

You need to contact your GP urgently

Or ring 111

LIZS · 15/03/2022 11:46

500mg, as in 100 spoons? A and E if so.

Emergency 999 for sure - now

stressedandwaiting · 15/03/2022 11:47

I would call 111. Not what you asked but 500mg is far too much for a 4 year old as well!

Mrspike888 · 15/03/2022 11:47

500mgs as in one paracetamol tablet crushed in spoon full of jam she was only supposed to have half

Mumsnet is not the right place to go for a medical issue, especially not one like this.

Nobody here can help you. Call 999 straight away.

Ducksurprise · 15/03/2022 11:48

500mg would be an overdose for a 4 year old, tablets are not suitable for small children. You need to ring 111

Donkeyinamanger · 15/03/2022 11:48

This is not a question you need to be asking randoms on the internet. You need proper urgent medical advice.

toastfiend · 15/03/2022 11:49

Please don't call 111 or your GP. This is not the sort of thing that should wait. This is exactly what 999 is for.

NerrSnerr · 15/03/2022 11:50

You need medical advice now and to stop giving paracetamol tablets to your children as you clearly can't work out the doses.

Here is advice about dosages and age. 500mg is too much for an 8-9 year old too so if you've been giving your 4 year old 500mg you need to urgently get medical advice for both of them.

Agree to call 999 for this. We can’t advise. They won’t ‘tell you off’ for calling in this circumstance and time could be of the essence.

Call now!

Hope she’s ok xx

horseymum · 15/03/2022 11:51

Even a 6-10 year old should only have half a 500 mg tablet so I think I would get proper medical advice. Under 6 years shouldn't have a tablet dosage, can't be accurate enough. Please get advice quickly.

Notthissticky · 15/03/2022 11:51

Please call 999 now. They'll come out as an emergency, COVID or not.

Doable · 15/03/2022 11:51

999 can give you proper advice. It's a mistake, you were trying to follow rules, they will only be concerned about your child's health so please ring now!

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/03/2022 11:51

999 is completely unnecessary the daily maximum dose fir a two year old is 780mg. Ring 111 for reassurance but your child has not overdosed.

HairyFeline · 15/03/2022 11:51

Gosh, OP, why on Earth post here? You should be calling 999. Paracetamol is not something to mess with and can cause serious damage. Learn from this…after you’ve accessed emergency service.

berksandbeyond · 15/03/2022 11:51

Jesus Christ.
999 now.
For both children as neither should have had that much

drawingpad · 15/03/2022 11:52

Actually it's just one extra dose worth and the NHS says don't give any more for 24 hours. If it was 2 extra doses it would be a 111 call. This is not a life threatening 999 or A & E situation. Call your local pharmacy for reassurance.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/03/2022 11:52

Sorry typo! 720mg not 780mg.

wildthingsinthenight · 15/03/2022 11:52

I hope she's ok OPFlowers

LIZS · 15/03/2022 11:52

Just reread that it was a tablet. Our 500mg paracetamol box states nit for under 12. Please urgently seek advice, call A and E first re. Covid.

drawingpad · 15/03/2022 11:53

Ok, it's actually just over a double dose but it's by no means a medical emergency.

Notthissticky · 15/03/2022 11:53

FWIW, I took an accidental overdose of antidepressants whilst I was waiting for PCR test results. I called a pharmacy and they called 999 for me. The ambulance was here within 10 minutes and they were absolutely wonderful.
