Random vomiting in 11 year old

My DS has been sick in the morning a few times but then is absolutely fine the rest of the day. He will have a few days of being ok then be sick again. He’s also had more headaches than usual. This has been going on for a few weeks. I took him to the GP who did a few tests and ended up sending him straight to the hospital where he had lots of other tests (all fine).
Any ideas what it could be? I’m wondering if it’s linked to screen time the night before/something he’s eating/??? Any experiences?

One of my sons had something similar - gp suggested abdominal migraine. He grew out of it. Gp gave us some tablets to take if bad but didnt use them much.

Never heard of that @Makinglists - I’ll look into it. Thanks

Is he drinking enough ?
Have you tried giving him supper so his tummy isn’t empty for so long over night ?

Mumtoboyscanterbury · 12/03/2022 08:53

Possibly not drinking enough - we’ve been encouraging the water. He has dinner at 6.30ish then always a snack or two before bed so not sure he needs extra. Maybe though?! His food and drink routine hasn’t changed.

Sounds like the abdominal migraines my daughter had. I would suggest going to a really good optometrist and getting his eyes checked just in case as issues with optic nerve can cause dizziness and sickness but would not necessarily be seen by a doctors

Mumtoboyscanterbury · 12/03/2022 08:55

He has an eye appointment coming up.

DD had exactly this at the same age for a few months. It was really odd ... she'd be fine, suddenly go all clammy and be violently sick, sleep for a couple of hours and then be absolutely fine. One the first occasion, she woke up, came downstairs & found her brother eating an ice cream and asked for one to which I said no as she'd just been sick but, as she had more episodes, it seemed that, once she'd slept it off she really was fine.
We went to the GP too as it was happening once every couple of weeks and was getting quite disruptive. There was absolutely no pattern to it so it didn't seem to be linked to anything she'd eaten, done, was about to do, school, activities etc. I wondered if it might be something related to puberty but there didn't seem to be any pattern at all - it could be five days apart and then nothing for three weeks. The GP said to monitor it but it just stopped and she's been fine for months now.
When she was about 7 she used to her stomach aches for now apparent reason and so I wasn't sure if this was just a repeat of that but just presenting in a slightly different way.

Thank you - this is so helpful!
I do wonder if it’s linked to hormones and migraines would make sense if so. Hope he grows out of it too!

Thats exactly how ds1 was started around 10/11 and stopped by 13 so do wonder if hormones were part of it. He was very prone to motion sickness when little and couldnt cope with 3d movies as they made him sick.

SnaccidentsHappen · 12/03/2022 09:01

My DS is similar, his sickness comes at night. He went through a period when he was 8/9 where it was more often. Now it's every few months I would say. I think it's abdominal migraines with him, he's 12 now.

Like your DS he always feels fine after,

grosgirl · 12/03/2022 09:27

I've had these symptoms since I was 3. I'm now 33. Was diagnosed with cyclical vomiting syndrome by Great Ormond Street when I was about 10. Might be worth asking your GP about?

juniorcakeoff · 14/03/2022 13:09

Hi Mumtoboys, just wanted to check that when the hospital ran their tests that they did an MRI. If they didn't (and I expect they did), you should ask for one. Hope this clears up soon.

Mumtoboyscanterbury · 14/03/2022 13:22

Thanks @grosgirl - sorry you’ve suffered for so long!
@juniorcakeoff they did a CT scan not an MRI - would an MRI show something different? We have a follow up appointment in a few weeks so I can always ask.

Ah good, CT scans usually pick up most stuff. However it might be worth you asking, if the symptoms are continuing, whether an MRI should be performed. Has an opthalmologist seen him yet? Just wondering whether anyone has had a look at the back of of his eyes too, maybe taken a picture. High street opticians can do this too.

Teenylittlefella · 14/03/2022 21:10

Just to mention, my dd has Crohn's including in her stomach. One of the symptoms (but not the only one) was sudden nausea and vomiting just once, out of nowhere, then she'd be fine again.

Other symptoms: low BMI, diarrhea, pale, loss of energy.

rainbowandglitter · 03/08/2022 10:14

Hi op did you ever get an answer to this? My 12yo ds has been having vomiting/diarrhoea for over 2 weeks now. It's not every day but its always in the morning and then he feels completely fine after.
