Anyone else able to see their child's epiglottis when looking in their throat?

I can see two large tonsils and the posterior wall of the iron-pharynx. The epiglottis is on the anterior wall of the oro-pharynx at the base of the tongue. Although your child can extend there tongue a long way I cannot see the epiglottis.

oro-pharynx

The light pink at the back of the throat is the epiglottis. I've attached another picture which might be better

Well it’s in the right place anatomically. Your child is able to extend their tongue sufficiently to see it.
Unless they have a problem with choking when swallowing not sure what the problem is.

Angrymum22 · 09/03/2022 14:22

It’s known as a high rising epiglottis. It’s a benign anatomical variation seen more often in children. As long as she has no underlying congenital disorders, which at her age would have been apparent, then it’s not a problem.
If you are worried get your GP to look at it. But it looks healthy and is a normal shape.

We have the same thing with our daughter but she has periodic chronic cough with croup and can't help but think it's related?

Photo attached (taken at the point of coughing) and link to my post here: www.mumsnet.com/talk/childrens_health/4698307-our-6yo-has-a-periodic-chronic-cough-since-age-of-2-undiagnosed-please-help

Can anyone help? We've seen specialists and no-one has been able to help.

Heya did you ever get this investigated? I'm currently going through the same with my 2.5yr old.
Thanks

I’m also very interested to find out more. I’ve only just seen it at the back of my 2yo boy. I’m very scared 😟

My daughter is 2, about 5 months ago I noticed she had high rising epiglottis as well so I asked her doctor if it was normal… she said It was completely normal as kids have everything so small and also when they open there mouth really wide it’s noticeable.

nothing to worry about as long as they don't have problems swallowing etc.
