3yo always ill?! Is this normal

My 3yo is constantly ill this winter. Colds, chest infections, sickness...everything. She seems to take a long time to get over most of the illnesses she picks up too. All the other children her age seem to bounce back or get through everything fine.

She does suffer with a wheeze so colds hit her harder and has has been hospitalised in the past. She's been in nursery since she was 1 (on and off due to lockdowns) so I'd expect the illness to slow down? anyone else finding this winter worse for illness in their little ones?

This winter bugs season started in July, so definitely a bad one.

Sounds about right. Apart from the not bouncing back bit. First? Vitamins? sleep? Stress? Exercise? Varied activity ?

Is she in nursery? When mine started pre-school it was constant colds for the first year. Twins, the “schedule” was DD2,DD1 then me. Every bloody time 🤦‍♀️

She's my first and only child, has daily vitamins, sleeps 12 hours most nights, never stops on the days she's well so well exercised!

Just every time she steps foot into pre school she comes out with another bug

She started nursery when she was 1 and she's just started a new pre school in Jan. I'd expect her immune system to be some what better than it is to say she's been at a nursery for so long!

My son is 5 and has been sick tonight, his last sickness bug was 2.5 weeks ago, then a few weeks before that he had covid, before that tonsillitis, with colds in between. He’s my youngest child, my other two are teenagers and they were never like this. I wonder if it’s because of so much cleaning, hand sanitiser, not mixing properly over the last 2 years?!

flyingdream · 09/03/2022 21:26

I could have written this exact post for my 4 year old last year and I did. Yes it's normal and it's only in January this year shes improved and isn't sick a lot. She's got a cold but it's bearable and she can function whereas from nursery to the first 2 terms of reception she was absent a lot and in bed. Adequate sleep and vitamins do help. So does eating healthy ( cutting down on chocolate and sugary drinks), eating properly. I try to keep her routine to a minimum. I don't take her shopping with me otherwise she gets tired and gets sick. Little little things help. It's normal don't worry.

Mine is a bit younger but it’s been a nightmare since August. Had a couple of hospital stays and been told each time that because kids haven’t been mixing as much due to covid, they haven’t had the normal exposure so doctors are seeing lots of back to back illnesses and kids overwhelmed catching 2 or even 3 things at once (for us it was tonsillitis, rhino/endo/urti virus and a stomach bug all at the same time, worst week this year!).

I have been counting down to March and better weather so hopefully it calms down a bit. He also has a wheeze - he’s just been given a steroid inhaler and that’s made a big difference already x

Yes mine were like this too. Felt like we could not go through a week without a bug.

Karma1981 · 10/03/2022 18:28

A child's immune system doesn't reach full potential until around 7.
Some kids catch absolutely everything and some don't, most of mine caught everything going until they got to juniors then it wasn't as bad.
Your doing everything you can, hopefully the spring and summer should help.

I just can't understand why my little ones friend at nursery can spend the entire time with my daughter and never get ill yet every time my daughter steps foot into nursery she ends up in bed ill by the end of the week!
