Chicken pox

First time Mummy here... My daughter has currently got chicken pox, since Friday and has had a bit of a temp since (between 37.7 - 39) is this normal to have a temp for this long? I'm struggling with only being able to give her Calpol as Ibuprofen normally works better for her. She is fine in herself just obviously itchy and has a runny nose. Please can someone reassure me that this is all normal please? Anxiety is starting to get the better of me! Xx

Good to hear she is fine in herself - sounds all ok, please don’t give her ibuprofen though - it can impact badly with the chickenpox.

LaTomatina · 06/03/2022 17:03

Yup, sounds totally normal. My youngest has it right now (and my older ones had it about 5 years ago). If she's fine in herself it's all good. She has the temperature because her body is fighting it, so it's probably a good sign that she'll be on the mend again soon. It's such a dramatic looking illness considering it's rarely serious..

EmmaLitt · 06/03/2022 17:57

Thanks Guys! ♥️ I'm one of them annoying mothers who freak out at the sign of a temperature even though I know it's completely normal! We are on day 4 tomorrow so I'm hoping - fingers crossed 🤞🏻 That she will be a bit better tomorrow! I hope your little one isn't suffering too much! Xx

Yeah luckily I knew about the no ibuprofen as it's normally my go too when she has a fever! Xx

My DS developed chickenpox on Friday too and still has a slight temp with Calpol - when we spoke to GP she didn’t seem at all concerned and said it could be off and on for a few days.

Smeds · 06/03/2022 20:29

We're also dealing with chicken pox. Day 2 here and DD has a slight temp and very shivery. Its horrible to see her so poorly. Hope your DD feels better soon @EmmaLitt

EmmaLitt · 06/03/2022 21:02

It does seem to be doing the rounds - guessing it's because we've all been locked up for 2 years! I hope they are all feeling much better in the morning. I lost my dad a year ago and since then I suffer really bad with health anxiety so it puts me on edge! I've just found out that 2 girls I were at work with on Thursday have tested positive so I'm terrified of testing positive then passing it on to my DD with her having the pox too! 😭😭

My 5 year old currently has it too along with over half of her class. She actually hasn't had a fever or any other symptoms other than hundreds of spots, and neither did her sisters when they had it (a long time ago) but I have heard that day 3 is usually the worst day and when the fever usually stops if they have one, so hopefully this is the worst over for your DD.

TellMeAboutItStud · 07/03/2022 09:25

@EmmaLitt snap re the covid!! A friend I saw for four hours on Tuesday tested positive on Thurs and then Fri the chickenpox appeared - we could really do without Covid on top of chickenpox!! Got a 9month old baby too so hope she doesn’t get either of them although from what I’ve read, the chickenpox is so contagious it’s inevitable Sad

EmmaLitt · 07/03/2022 10:35

@TellMeAboutItStud Oh no!! 😩 I'm just going to keep LFT! Hopefully it stays out of our households! I know a lot of the children in my daughters nursery class have all come down with chicken pox over the weekend! Xx

@EmmaLitt it certainly seems to be doing the rounds at the moment!

LaTomatina · 07/03/2022 12:46

@TellMeAboutItStud good news regarding your baby, she might be OK - I had a 5 month old when my oldest 2 had it 5 years ago.. despite getting thoroughly exposed and sneezed on by his toddler brothers, the baby never got chicken pox, presumably still little enough to have immunity from me from before being born and breastfeeding. That baby is now 5 years old and although his 3 year old brother now has chicken pox he appears to be still immune (although time will tell...)

TellMeAboutItStud · 07/03/2022 12:48

@LaTomatina oh that give me hope!!! Thank you for sharing :)

LaTomatina · 07/03/2022 14:02

@TellMeAboutItStud no worries, I think I consulted Mumsnet at the time, and other people had experienced similar with babies under 1 year, so fingers crossed it goes that way for you too!!

Heckythump1 · 07/03/2022 14:09

Doing the rounds here too... a lot of DDs Y1 class have it, thankfully DD has already had it, but I have wondered if she could bring it home to her baby sister? (who also currently has covid!) I'm presuming not though!

Hope all the spotty little ones are feeling better soon!

TellMeAboutItStud · 07/03/2022 14:11

@LaTomatina it would make sense that she still has some of my immunity - fingers v tightly crossed!!

EmmaLitt · 07/03/2022 17:47

Oh gosh! There is a lot of it!

I've heard that about you give your babies immunity until they are 1 year old too!

I'm not worried about me catching Covid - I've already had it it's more if I catch it and pass it onto my daughter and what effect it will have on her with already having chicken pox.

Also we are day 4 of the pox and she's still running a low grade fever? Is this still normal or should I be ringing the Dr tomorrow? Xx

I think it's still fine, OP, so long as it's below 40 and she's otherwise reasonably like herself.

We're on about day 6 or 7 now, I haven't been checking his temperature but I think we have peaked in terms of spots - don't seem to be any more fresh ones and although they are still disgusting and plenty of them I can see they are slowly drying up now. He is mostly himself, but still tires/gets tearful a lot quicker than usual, so I would say it'll be another 7 days yet before he's over it.
