Meningitis, Rash

Hi, quick question. So I was in hospital with my 3 year old daughter who had high temp, fast heart rate, vomited and just didn’t seem herself. After waiting hours to see Doc after he checked her out he said that he thinks it’s just viral. 2 days later her temp had gone but I noticed a rash all over her body, worried I went back to hospital who again was saying just viral but as I was really worried and my daughter wasn’t herself having recently just had uti, they done a blood test. 1 hour for results and they said all was fine and they think again the rash is just symptoms of something viral.
It’s 2 days later and my daughters rash has gotten worse. although other than reduced eating and drinking she seems ok watching tv ect. just a little more fatigued. If this is meningitis would it have shown up in her blood tests? Probably a stupid question but I’m just still a little worried as she’s my first and only child and I’m new to all this.

It would be better to seek urgent medical help. You can take her back to hospital. You must not delay if you think it is meningitis.

I agree if you suspect meningitis either get in the cat and go to A and E or if you don’t have your own transport ring 999.

What does the rash look like. The Meningitis/Sepsis rash is under the skin doesnt blanch. A post viral rash that is raised and all over the body is all fairly common

If they have seen it and given her the all clear and she just is tired a post viral rash sounds the most logical explanation.

Firstly if you are worried then go back to A&E, but read this first!

However my ds used to get non fading viral rashes. Flat on the skin, non-fading under a glass. Exactly like the meningitis rash sometimes. They used to send him to A&E for a blood test-and it was a viral rash every time.

However the drs at A&E said that the rash is normally a late symptom of meningitis. So by the time the rash is coming out, they're clearly very ill. From that, I think it's unlikely that the rash is meningitis. Having had the rash for two days without treatment then she'd be likely to be at best unconscious.

The most likely from the sound is that it's a viral rash. If it's more on her limbs (and sores in her mouth) then it could be hand, foot and mouth potentially-which is really just a specific viral rash.

But if she is appearing more ill, then, yes, go back every time.

Equally well if you have any reason to suspect meningitis, then don't wait for the rash-it can be too late by then.
Quick check for meningitis if she's old enough to listen and obey is get her to kiss her knee. With meningitis typically the neck won't bend enough to manage to kiss her knee.
Other thing is you would expect a reaction to light. that's standard daylight being too bright, so watching TV would be an absolute no.

But as always, if you suspect meningitis, the drs would far rather see you 100 times to check and it not be, than miss the 1 time it was.

If you suspect meningitis get medical help, always better safe than sorry. I hve been told my Drs in the past that the rash is late symptom of meningitis and you would be very unwell by the time the rash appears.
