Can a grey baby tooth go white again after trauma?

I’m very upset, I know I shouldn’t be but can’t help it! There are far more important things that i should be concerned about! Bad mummy!
My son got hit in the face by a seesaw three weeks ago and two of his front teeth have gone grey/purple. There is no other damage. I’ve read various things on the internet about them dying and staying black and just being bruised and turning white again. I just want them to go back to how they were I’m finding it so hard to look at him like this. I know they will fall out eventually and its cosmetic but I can’t help how sad it’s making me feel. Does anyone have any stories? I’d obviously love them to go back to how they were. Any stories or encouragement would be really appreciated.

Thank you again for your replies. I will live in hope! I’ll certainly update if it does turn white.

Unlikely - DD has a slightly off colour milk tooth. Dentist said the nerve is dead. Next tooth will be white.

JellybabyGina87 · 01/03/2022 12:45

My daughters front baby tooth went gray after falling and banging it. Hers did go white again but not quite as white as it was.

OnSilverStars · 07/03/2022 22:44

@TopTabby op asked if the tooth can go back to being white. The people saying "no it can't. My kid's didnt" are wrong

Ljhbaby · 27/06/2022 08:39

@bluebabydinosaur just out of interest how is your child’s tooth now? My little one seems ‘greyer’ in the morning and whitens throughout the day. So bizarre

My lg chipped her tooth and the tooth went grey, I applied neat toothpaste to the tooth when brushing her teeth, I'd then brush the rest if her teeth, the tooth turned white again but I had to do it regularly to keep it white

The discolouration is INSIDE the tooth. If you look at a diagram there are nerves and blood vessels in the pulp of the tooth. When the blood supply is cut off from a blow, the nerves and blood vessels die and change colour which shines through two layers, the dentine and the enamel. No amount of brushing is going to change that. My own DS hit one of his front teeth on the coffee table and it went grey. If I could have changed it, as a children's dentist, I would have done, but he was stuck with it until he was six.

My DD got accidentally headbutted by a much larger pupil in primary school and her front tooth went discoloured where blood seeped into it. It did lighten over the following months but didn't go back to white. The new ones were perfect when they grew in, fortunately.

You say it's making you feel very sad OP. I'm sure you will, but please keep those feelings internalised and don't show your DS that you have any negative feeling about his teeth.

I wanted to update you especially as you were all so helpful and someone has asked. My sons two grey teeth did indeed turn white again. I would never have believed it to be possible. I had just got used to them being grey and I noticed they started tingling a bit mottled grey and white. I ignored it as I thought it was just me and actually thought they might be getting ready to fall out but then after a couple of weeks they turned white again and the same white as they were before. It’s funny as I had just accepted that it didn’t really matter and I should have just been grateful it wasn’t much worse which it could have been. My friend is a dentist and she says it was quite possible and even then I didn’t believe her. Utterly Amazing. My dentist friend (who I’m inclined to believe over any dentist now) said that the adult teeth would not be damaged as at the age of four they would already be formed underneath the gum it’s when they are younger they are more likely to be damaged. I do hope that this helps someone as you all really did help me. Oh and no, I did not at any stage let my son know I was upset by his teeth. I told him they were beautiful. Thank you!

DS knocked a front tooth - went whiter but you could still tell if you got really close to him (well I could tell, no one else has ever mentioned it!)

insomniac1 · 23/04/2023 19:51

Hi Op! Did your sons tooth return to white?

Thank you!

bluebabydinosaur · 24/04/2023 11:17

Hello, yes both of them did. Quite incredible. They are both still in place and look great. Good luck

My sons tooth turned white again. Took quite a long time but it’s still there and you’d never know 👌

Sunnyside94 · 14/05/2024 20:35

@Rhi86 how long did it take for your little ones tooth to whiten up again?
this has happened to my little boy and I feel terrible I know there’s more important things but cant help feel terrible everytime I look at him :( he had such a perfect set of teeth before!

bluebabydinosaur · 15/05/2024 09:26

It took a couple of months I think. He is now nearly 7 and it is still there. Looking ever so slightly grey at the back but nothing more than that. I remember how upset I was but I promise, promise, promise you that this will not matter with time. Dont let yourself loose anytime worrying over it. His bottom ones have now fallen out to be replaced by big wonky ones that give him a lisp and his baby teeth have become worn down and yellowed in places. It really doesnt matter. He is as handsome as ever, if not more. You just have to try and get over it as quick as you can. These babies come out perfect and we try to keep them like that but its just not possible. Good luck.

Thank you for the update OP, My DD (just turned 3) hit her front teeth quite bad on the 9th may, no bleeding or anything and was fine after a couple minutes, I just noticed this weekend the front two look like they have started to darken to a light grey (2-3 weeks post injury) it’s hard to notice if you’re not looking for it, just wondering if you ever took any images I could compare to? Did they slowly start going grey and get darker or stay a light shade of grey and lighten? Just trying to compare as we are down with sickness bug and most likely won’t get to a dentist until Thurs/fri. Feel devastated and praying they either stay the same or get lighter. Very mixed messages online as some dentists say there is no chance of it returning white and it will just die…

attached photo of my daughters, it may be hard to see here but It’s more distinctive in the day light
