Tooth decay or something else?

My 14 month old has a white spot on both of his front teeth. None near the gum lines or anywhere else. Just the ones you see on the picture. He doesn't go to bed with a bottle or anything like that (he's on cows milk).
Always brush his teeth twice a day and always before bed. He doesn't have any sweets, fruit juices or squash. Only on water. He does eat a lot of fruit as he loves it but mainly with meals. Occasionally as a snack.
It is a nightmare trying to clean his teeth. I more or less have to pin him down and do it and he screams at me but it's the only way I can do it. I'm definitely certain I clean them effectively.
I've phoned the dentist and they said they have a massive waiting list for toddlers so can't see them yet. The receptionist said that toddlers can get spots on their teeth and not to worry. But I am worried that it could be early decay. Although I don't know how honestly. Genetically I've got great teeth.

What do you guys think?

I must add he does a dummy to sleep with but I always make sure it's clean before he has it

It’s known as enamel hyperplasia. The enamel is crystalline in structure, sometimes during the formation of enamel some of the crystals don’t quite line up so the area looks a different colour as the light does refract through it in the same way as the rest of the enamel giving it a frosted look. Sometimes the enamel is weaker and wears more.
It’s a very small area and not in a typical area for decay. But be careful of the effect of dietary acids ( fruit, fruit juices and fizzy drinks and yoghurt to a lesser extent) stick to water and milk and don’t allow them to drink from a bottle.

Hey
i see your other post about autism concerns. I have very similar concerns to what yours was. Especially about the hands
do you have an update on your little ones progression. Do they have autism or did they outgrow? X

Laura1990111 · 12/01/2023 04:59

@Danielle1989x he completely outgrew it. He definitely doesn't have autism. He doesn't twist his wrists at all now and is developmentally on track for his age :-)
What is your little on doing to make you worried?

@Laura1990111 oh thank you for getting back to me. I’ve been so so worried
so he does his hands. Usually when excited or frustrated. They sometimes twist or they can just open and close quite fast
he also started twisting his feet with his legs straight too.
he has a few quirks
he can stare at people and be very straight faced. He moans as soon as I leave the room. He wakes often in the night like every 2 hours (I am BF him)
he feels with his thumb
pats alot. Like if playing with a book he will hold in one hand and keep parting with the other. I felt there was a bit of repetitive play but his 8 months so too young to tell
he has NO comforts. Doesn’t like teddies and has a blanket but only really holds it when I feed him
Gets frustrated quite quick
he learnt to clap but a month later stopped
but he is trying to crawl, stand and now says Mumumumumumum ?!
I don’t know. Maybe I’m over thinking it
If he didn’t do his hands maybe I wouldn’t over evaluate him but just so scared and worried for autism because his hand movements. X

Danielle1989x · 12/01/2023 09:58

@Laura1990111
he also has food allergies
dairy. Soya. Egg. Wheat
i know there is a link between gut and autism so that also worries me.
he has such a sensitive tummy

Agree with pp, it’s enamel hypoplasia (hyperplasia is a typo)
Usually caused by medications, like antibiotics or less than ideal nutrition.

Not decay, nothing to worry about really.

Im more concerned about you pinning him down to brush his teeth while he is screaming and distressed. This isn’t going to set him up for liking dentists visits or do do good hygiene by himself.

Laura1990111 · 12/01/2023 14:49

@Danielle1989x my son did every single one of those things. He didn't find comfort in anything and was an awful sleeper. He's fine now and sleeps through the night and loves his bunny Teddy. Xxx

@Onnabugeisha Nah he's absolutely fine and loves having his teeth brushed now.
His dentist actually said to pin him down if I need to as teeth brushing should be a non negotiable and it's actually better to do that than let his teeth go rotten as that would cause so much pain and a lot more issues.

@Laura1990111
Oh really?!
All of them?
did he have any allergies too. Did you breast feed or bottle feed?
when did he learn to walk?
did he ever do something and then stop. That really worried me that he clapped and now won’t at all :-(
reassuring to speak to someone who went through similar x

legalseagull · 12/01/2023 17:33

It's really common OP. Both mine have it. It's unlikely to affect adult teeth, it's usually just baby teeth that get it

That’s a relief! I thought it was still the case now from your OP which would be concerning from a developmental delay pov.

Laura1990111 · 13/01/2023 12:55

@Danielle1989x
Yeah he did all of them. He doesn't have any allergies no but the rest he did.
He learnt to walk at 13 months and he was combi fed up until about 5 months and then he was formula fed for the rest. He's a very bright little boy. Hope you're ok. Try not to stress. He sounds absolutely perfect xxx

Laura1990111 · 13/01/2023 12:57

@Onnabugeisha I don't think it would show a debelopmental delay. A lot of babies and toddlers hate having their teeth brushed. It's a really common thing
