Tip toe walking and tight muscles

I posted about this a few months ago and now I can't find the thread. Ds is 8 and walks on his tip toes. For context he also has global development delay/moderate learning difficulties and took his first steps aged 2.5 years. He also wears insoles in his shoes. We saw an orthotist in about September last year I think and he was really patronising and said there was nothing wrong with ds and he should just stop doing it. He also told me off for not doing exercises recommended by the physio when we hadn't seen a physio for 6 years anyway and the physio hadn't said we should be doing exercises with him when he was discharged anyway.

We were supposed to see his paediatrician in October but it got rescheduled due to covid and we saw her yesterday. She said his muscles were really tight and that his balance is really bad when he tried to walk with his feet flat on the floor and he was walking bent over. When he was walking on his tip toes he could stand up straight. Paediatrician said she was going to refer him to an orthopaedic Dr and they might recommend stretching exercises but he might need more than that. I'm nervous about what kind of treatment he might need and I'm anticipating a long wait to see the orthopaedic Dr. I'm not sure how long though, I forgot to ask.

We are going through the same with my DS (16) he is just as you describe. We have been to the podiatrist and they gave him exercises to do. We have seen improvement by using the scholl insoles rather than the ones they gave him at the clunic. They are mainly for overweight people and are about £20. If you look on Amazon and see the ones that support the hip they are the ones. It is improving but I think he will always have a forward gate. The pain is getting better. They are against surgery so you will be told to try the exercises and insoles first. We are there next month for another appt. As ASD is in our family I suspected it was a trait and was scoffed at so don't expect the podiatrist to joint the dots unfortunately

Thankyou. I will have a look at the school insoles.

I understand tip toe walking is one of the signs some people show as part of autism. I had a university student who told me he did this and was advised by a person with more experience of autistic students that this was part of the spectrum

Perhaps support thread for autism might have practical advice
