Norovirus 14 month old and breastfeeding

Evening all

My partner and I came down with The dreaded norovirus a couple of days ago and we were hoping 14 month old DS had avoided it. From 2pm today he has been projectile vomiting continually.

We’ve tried offering diorilyte but he’s not tolerating anything at the moment. We’re aware of signs of dehydration so keeping a close eye out for those.

I’m confused around the advice for breastfeeding - he is still breastfed mainly at night and as part of his bedtime routine. He tried some milk around 4pm today and vomited back up immediately. Wanted milk again around 8pm so offered him a small amount but he was sick again after around 10 minutes. He is likely to wake up numerous times throughout the night for milk - do I give it to him even if it makes him sick? He’s so sick I think he wants it for comfort also but cuddles aren’t cutting it.

Any advice would be lovely, I'm still feeling fragile myself for being stuck on the loo for the last 2 days and generally feeling very sorry for myself Sad

Poo little mite, it is horrible when they are so poorly, have you tried fluid from a syringe, 5mls every 15 minutes until tolerated?

Thankyou so much for the reply. We did try some diorilyte from a syringe every 10 mins or so a couple of hours ago but Gave up after 30 mins because he kept throwing up and it just felt cruel. It’s awful just feeling so helpless! X

If he isn't keeping that down I would be inclined to call for advice, he may need to be seen,

This happened when my DD was 9mo. Was advised just to feed as often as she would feed. Even if she vomitted it back up it was still getting fluids into her. It felt wrong as it felt as if I was making her sick but dehydration is worse.

How many wet nappies has he had today?

stairgates · 23/02/2022 22:56

When mine have had this I put a towel underneath us at bedtime, we co sleep, then any puke can be caught on that instead of having to change the bed if it helps. Its horrible :(

Thankyou for the reassurance - that’s exactly how I feel!

Thankyou. He’s slept for hours tonight (unlike him) but if he still cannot tolerate anything when he wakes, I think I will call 111/gp to see if he can be checked like you’ve said

2 wet nappies since the vomitting started - and the one he is in now feels like it is slightly wet. When he was dehydrated before, the doctor told me 2 wet nappies a day minimum and anything less is when to worry. Although that doesn’t seem a lot?

Thankyou for this tip - will definitely do this!
