3 year old vomiting in sleep

Anyone any ideas?

Past 2 nights 3 year old DS has been sick all over himself and his bed in his sleep. Didn't catch last nights until we woke this morning but he's just done it again there.
Eating and drinking fine during the day, no issues there. No issues with toileting either, everything else is normal.

Full disclosure😬
He still sleeps with a dummy. Could this be causing him to be sick? My heart is in my mouth thinking he's going to choke in his sleep😥

Does he have a vomiting bug? You have to make sure his dummies are sterilised. Just turn him on his side. If he is sick for third night in a row I’d take him hospital. It’s quite worrying though as you don’t want him to aspirate vomit into his lungs.

Hairyfriend · 19/02/2022 22:42

Is he overheating at night? Any food changes or sleep time changes? Bad dreams? I doubt sleeping with a dummy would be the issue if he has always done this without issues before.

I vividly recall staying overnight at my nans house and being told in the morning that I'd vomited all over myself and the bed at night. I had no recollection of the vomiting at all though! I was maybe 4?

Could he stay on a blow up/camp bed in your room tonight, then you'd hear any vomiting? Or you sleep in his room? I too would be worried about choking.

I don't think it's a bug.
No other symptoms and he's not sick or "off form" during the day, only at night.
Nobody else in the house is sick either.
I'm currently sleeping on a pull out bed on his bedroom floor 😥

@Hairyfriend
Cross posted! Yes, I'm in his room with him.
He's never been a fantastic eater and sticks to his usual favourites. Plain foods, pasta, sausages etc
His room is pretty cool usually so no issues with overheating. The opposite of anything.

So worrying!!

Doubtful to be his dummies. I wouldn't say it's something he needs taking up to hospital for if he's no other symptoms but understand your worries!!

Could be loads of different things, reflux, allergies, eaten something that's weighing a bit heavy on his tummy

whataballbag · 19/02/2022 22:48

I'd ring 111 if you're worried, dependant on your area will more than likely go through to out of hours gp who may be able to reassure you at least if nothing else

My friend’s son cough a lot at night (possible asthma) and often gags on the mucus and vomits.

He’s completely unaware of it as he’s half asleep, there’s just a little pile of sick in the bed in the morning.

Tee20x · 19/02/2022 22:51

Was going to come on and say has he got a cough. DD is 14 months old and recently started nursery so has basically been ill ever since. She often coughs at night and if she coughs a bit too much or it gets her wrong she will be sick.

I'm sure I read somewhere that mucus etc can make kids feel nauseous? And you produce more at night so may explain why it doesn't happen in the daytime

Hairyfriend · 19/02/2022 22:53

I'd suggest a PCR. Some children (and adults) present with GI upset such as vomiting and/or diarrhoea with Omicron, so worth checking its not that.

jadey1991 · 19/02/2022 22:54

I would call doctors op just to be on the safe side: could be anything but because he is still young I defo would get it checked asap

Tonsiltrouble · 19/02/2022 22:55

We had this (well sort of, no actual vomit but lots of random feeling sick/general GI upset) and it was the start of covid.

Northernsoullover · 19/02/2022 22:56

Mine used to do this. He did it twice before the age of 3. Luckily we used to bedshare. I assumed he had a bug and he grew out of it.

amoobaa · 19/02/2022 22:58

I remember vomiting at night, as a kid. Turns out I was having nocturnal seizures.

Nobody ever knew. Seizures are not always obvious. In fact, I only found out decades later in my mid 20s!

It’s unlikely to be seizures but I just wanted to let you know my experience, just in case.

Hope you get to the bottom of it asap Flowers

wishihadagoodone · 19/02/2022 23:12

I hadn't even considered Covid!
Testing him tomorrow morning for sure though.
He had a cough a few weeks ago, was tested etc and doctors said it was viral and it's pretty much gone now.

Let us know how you get on OP.

Thewindwhispers · 19/02/2022 23:45

If he’s waking up to vomit and then going back to sleep, don’t worry too much but obvs keep an eye on his hydration level and ask doctor for a solution. One fab gp gave my baby a paracetamol suppository which stopped the vomiting within an hr 👏

If henis vomiting while asleep without waking then ask a professional or 111 what to do, that does sound worrying.

Good luck!! Hope he’s better soon!

Jules58 · 20/02/2022 00:21

My little one (4yrs) has reflux that can make him cough, and vomit at night, because of the build up of acid. He has also been a fussy eater, which again is due to his reflux because some foods, make the acid worse, which then burns his throat, so he stops eating. He is now on Omprezole and his cough, has greatly improved, and He is eating a lot better.

wishihadagoodone · 20/02/2022 10:42

Hi all.

No further episodes last night thank goodness!
He woke this morning at his usual time and was immediately asking for pancakes, toast and juice.
Interesting about the reflux though. My DF suffers from this and is taking omeprazole daily. If there's another episode tonight, I'll be making a GP appointment for Monday.

Thanks for all your help and helping me not freak out!!

My son was like this, only ever sick on a night time. No other symptoms and it turned out to be a urine infection.
