Lymph nodes

Can anyone whose been in similar position tell me what happens with enlarged lymph nodes?

So far had an ultrasound which "confirmed nodes are enlarged" - no idea if that's good or not? Booked in for a repeat ultrasound in a month. What happens if they're still enlarged at the next ultrasound?

One node is over 2cm which triggered the ultrasound scan.

Lack of communication from hospital isn't very reassuring!

Have you got online access to med records? Is be all over that like a rash. Or I'd call the GP and be asking questions

Hi. I'm not sure if this is useful but the flow chart here seems quite good?

Not a doctor but my son is in remission from lymphoma, and I can tell you that if they see something of concern on the ultrasound they will be all over it asap. They can tell from the ultrasound if the nodes look normal or not - apparently sometimes they can be reactive and stay enlarged after an infection/virus for sometime. For my son, his original node measured 4cmx5cm and we moved very quickly from MRI to biopsy and PET scan. So I know this won’t help but try not to catastrophise as they will watch closely and move quickly if they are worried Flowers

I actually tried to contact pediatrics to say DC has more raised lymph nodes since the original ultrasound, received a letter from pediatric doctor to basically say the scan confirmed enlarged lymph nodes but in regards to the nodes to contact GP.

Contacted Gp, who seemed a bit baffled why paediatrics had told me to contact them about it. They've logged it but basically said pediatrics are the best to deal with it all..

Feel like I'm going round in circles!

They've done blood tests, and also have a repeat of them in a month too.

Thanks you @Askinvillarblues , I'm glad your son is in remission.

It's really hard not to panic about it all, but like you say I'm sure had anything been wrong they'd have moved on very quickly.

It just concerned me that they wanted a repeat ultrasound, and no one has said they're normal?

There's other concerning symptoms along with this which makes it harder - skin rashes, severe itching, night sweats, long term cough.

Very hard not to worry I know. I think the protocol for persistent swollen glands >2cm is to try antibiotics for a week or so to see if that helps, monitor for any change and then if needed further scans and biopsy if deemed necessary. Even when we had a pretty strong idea my son had relapsed (he has regular checkups so it was picked up quickly), we still had to do the antibiotics first and then wait for scans before another biopsy. Apparently most biopsies come back as normal nodes so that’s a positive to hold on to even if you get to that stage.

My DC has had enlarged lymph nodes since July, particularly in his groin. Tonight he said he thought they'd got bigger.

Various GPs (mainly locums) have seen/felt them. He's had a couple of blood tests which were ok (except raised creatinine - he has scarred kidneys so has just had a repeat GFS scan for that). He's also had an ultrasound before Christmas. Nobody seems worried.

He has very itchy skin, which I've read can be a worrying system, but doctors say it's just dry.

I recently mentioned to a distant relation about the swollen lymph nodes in his groin and, weirdly, she had them a few years ago. They lasted for several months and eventually went.

I'm still worried...

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/02/2022 20:55

@Beccatheboo it is a worry isn't it, I hope you get some answers soon too.

Glad I came across this thread, I've just taken my 3 year old to the doctors for enlarged lymph nodes neck. And groin so we're off for bloods next week.
The doctor Did say to me that he's seen this lots before and as they grow, it just disappears, so I'm trying not to worry too much for now.
Hope you get some answers, can you ring peads directly to speak to them. About the repeat ultrasound?

Unfortunately not, I've called multiple times and been told I'd get calls back but haven't. It's really frustrated, escalated it to the patient experience team now..

I have heard that generally childrens enlarged lymph nodes are not of concern, but it's a worry that DC's are over 2cm. Sad
