Possible uti in toddler girl

5 nights ago my daughter had a temp, no other symptoms just high temp, called doctor no appointments, was told to go to an emergency walk in, where she was checked, her temp was fine by then and we were told to monitor and go home. She hasnt has a high a temp since but she is not herself. Her breath also smells and she is off her food. I asked about uti, at the walk in and the doc said, if you give me a sample I can test it... Hmm, well we couldn't there and then because she is still in nappies. I'm really annoyed by this because tonight she cried whilst she weed and I think she could possibly have a uti infection. Is this possible if her temp isn't so high anymore but she is still unsettled and off her food. Plus doesn't let me Chnage her nappy. So difficult to get a docs appointment, so I am annoyed when we saw the doc they didn't rule this out

I remember years ago a nurse told me it was possible for very young children to get cystitis. If you’ve ever had it you’ll know how awful it is. Needs treating quickly too.

Normally you'd be given a sterile container, a large puppy pad type thing over your lap and you wait until she does wee and try to catch it in the pot! You can get sterile containers from pharmacies, so I'd get a few, collect the urine and go to a walk in centre or your GP who can test it.

Thanks for responding. I've just looked up cystisis. Oh gosh. I should have pushed for them the doctor to check for a uti. She just said if you give me a sample I can check it. I said how do I get one and she just said you have to go to the hospital. Didn't occur to me at the time to ask how??? She is asleep now. No temp. But when she weed earlier she cried. We can't get gp appointments for love no money and it's closed over the weekend. Is it worth calling 111?

Just seen your post hairyfriend, that is good advice. I'll get a sterile container form the pharmacy and try to get a sample then try and get it tested at wall in or gp. Thanks

I think you can get an insert to put in their nappy to catch a urine sample.

By far the easiest way to get a sample from a toddler though is in a clean potty. Has she ever tried using a potty before? If yes, it could be worth a try.

Could she have a candidiasis infection (thrush)? which can effect the mouth too (you mentioned her breath smells) and it's not that uncommon - see link below. She could have developed it as a secondary issue to the infection she had earlier in the week. This may explain why she doesn't have a temperature but is still very uncomfortable going for a wee and also off her food?

Maybe call 111 and see what they suggest?

sorryforswearing · 12/02/2022 02:07

111 have appointments with GP’s ring fenced so you might get one through them. Or is there a walk in centre you could go to?

alexdgr8 · 12/02/2022 02:20

ring 111.
you might be able to get antibiotics without further delaying while seeking exact diagnosis.
good luck.

Undertheoldlindentree · 12/02/2022 02:40

Tell 111 you suspect a UTI - or go to a walk-in centre. An emergency GP told me that UTI's in small children need treating straight away or scar tissue can develop internally. Not to scare you but it needs dealing with urgently.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 12/02/2022 03:36

Ring 111.

You can also get a urine sample by placing cotton wool balls in a clean nappy and then wringing them out into a sample pot. Ensure your hands are spotlessly clean when doing.

thingymaboob · 12/02/2022 03:41

When I suspected a uti in my nappy wearing toddler, I took her nappy off and followed her around with a pot and towel for a few hours until she started weeing. I'd get enough for a sample and I'd put towel on floor to catch the rest. Had to do this twice

GraceTime · 12/02/2022 06:12

I've called 111 and am waiting for a call back from our local treatment centre when it opens after 8am. Thanks everyone for replying. I'll post back the advice I get

Quick update. The doctor from the urgent treatment centre called at 8:20 for an appointment at 9:15. Meant we didn't have time to get the sample. I did pop some cotton wool. In nappy but to no avail. Obs showed tonsillitis so we have some penicillin. Any tips on how to give this 4 times a day? She is refusing to take it.

Mix it with anything you think she might drink

Tempusfudgeit · 12/02/2022 12:39

You can buy urine dip strips for future testing.
