DD (9) crying with back/stomach ache again :(

I'm waiting on a call back from 111 currently. In October my DD (9) had COVID and two weeks later she started to get back pain and flank pain. She didn't have a temperature, the GP palpated her etc and they put it down to spinal inflammation caused by COVID. They sent her away with a prescription for ibuprofen (I rejected it but he insisted as she would need a lot). I rang back twice more because she was in pain but they kept telling me to wait and it got to Friday and they were still holding me off (the GP had rang the children's ward at the hospital to ask them, so was going off their advice). DD vomited and was crying on the floor in pain and her temperature had started to rise. I took her into children's A&E because by this point I was quite cross and worried so I wasn't thinking straight about ringing 111. They admitted her and took bloods etc and gave her antibiotics. She quickly seemed better after antibiotics so we got discharged. We found out later that there was bacteria in her sample that was cultured. Ultrasound found nothing.

In December this back ache started again. Writhing about in pain. GP gave precautionary antibiotics. There was protein in her wee so they sent it off to be cultured but it didnt grow anything.

January 19th she caught COVID again. On Friday she started again with this back pain but it wasn't so bad at first but got worse. I took in a sample on Monday morning but it was negative so they've not sent it for testing. However, they gave antibiotics and she's had 3 doses so far. Tonight she's writhing around with, crying, and this time she says its bad in her stomach too. She can't sit still, she's up and down, twisting around, crouching etc.

I've got in touch with 111 but I cant think what it could be? Any thoughts? An appendix wouldnt do this would it? I checked and there's no pattern to the timing as I thought it could be a build up to her starting her period or something.

I would take her straight to a and e. I love my GP but if my DD was crying in pain I wouldn't hang about.

Hugasauras · 08/02/2022 19:12

Have they mentioned kidney stones/issues? They are horrendously painful and can be all around your back and in your stomach (more painful than labour for me). Not sure how common they are in younger people.

labyrinthlaziness · 08/02/2022 19:14

I would also present at A&E with pain like that.

So very sorry your lovely DD is going through this, I hope you get answers and help soon.

She had an ultrasound and they didn't find anything. I'm guessing these would be seen on one? The tecnician was teaching a student during it so did it all slowly and detailed for them. When I spoke to the GP last night he said that's all they'd do for her if she was referred to anywhere so she didn't need any further testing. I have to say I disagree...

Get them to test her cortisol levels (they won’t have done this as standard bloods as it’s very rare but still worth considering - google adrenal insufficiency / Addison’s disease, the symptoms sound very similar especially the flank pain).

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 08/02/2022 19:20

If she's in so much pain, i would take her to A&E.

Whattochoosenow · 08/02/2022 19:23

Mesenteric lymphadenitis is a possibility maybe? It’s where the glands in your abdomen become enlarged and extremely painful when you’ve got a viral infection.

Chuchali · 08/02/2022 19:35

Sounds a lot like me when I had kidney stones, I was also fobbed off with antibiotics repeatedly and sent away from A&E. I had 4 ultrasounds and the 4th one found a 8mm stone in a ureter that the other 3 missed as they'd just scanned my kidneys and not the front.

Just before the stone passed my pain also moved round to the front

StellaGibs · 08/02/2022 19:45

111 rang back and referred to local OOH, so just waiting on them. She's improved a little bit but still in obvious discomfort.

Is there any chance she’s constipated? Sounds daft but I’ve had terrible back pain when I’ve been badly constipated before

Thank you. I can't remember now if they checked her ureters. I do remember them looking at her bladder so I think they did. However, I'm going to be more pushy on testing now that it's the third incidence in four months.

I don't know. She went yesterday and has said she's not had any changes in how frequently she goes or anything. She's not been today though but she's barely eaten for the last two days so I'm not sure if it's anything to wonder about.

Just throwing this out there. My friend has had side effects from covid jabs (she has had covid) which are presenting as abdominal problems, she has had numerous tests from various specialists of abdominal organs and nobody can find anything wrong. Symptoms eventually die down after a long time but come back after another booster. It's been put down to long covid but she thinks it's the vaccines.

NrlySp · 08/02/2022 20:02

I wonder if it’s www.yalemedicine.org/conditions/abdominal-migraine

My friends son had this. He eventually grew out of it but it was very unpleasant

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 08/02/2022 20:13

@WildPoinsettia I don't think it's a side effects of vaccine, they don't vaccinate healthy children under 12 in UK yet.

StellaGibs · 08/02/2022 20:26

She's not had the vaccine, only her brother who has epilepsy is eligible. As Rain said, she doesn't qualify for it at the moment.

Abdominal migraine is interesting, I'll have more of a read now. I rang her dad and he's taken her to OOH for me (we are separated).

Another vote for possible kidney stones. They may not have shown on US if she’d passed them?

StellaGibs · 08/02/2022 20:35

I meant to say thank you for your responses. I'm worried because its obviously not normal to have your child contorting themselves in pain on a regular basis. I just hope it's nothing serious.

Rewritethestars1 · 08/02/2022 20:37

Maybe constipation. It can be agony. Even if she is going once a day it can still be compacted. It can also cause awful trapped wind with makes you feel sick, hot and sweaty.

newbiename · 08/02/2022 20:45

I thought kidney stones ( I've had one)
They don't always show on ultrasound, even tiny ones can be agony.
Hope she gets sorted soon.

Porcupineintherough · 08/02/2022 21:38

Kidney infection? I don't wish to alarm you but COVID can damage the kidneys which might make them more prone to infection (maybe?)

TAmumto3 · 08/02/2022 21:46

DS had an auto immune response to a virus that attacked his kidneys - I think it was called iGa. Started with back pain that got worse and then protein in urine then very high blood pressure. Was in hospital for a week but went on to make a full recovery with no long term kidney damage.

NursieBernard · 08/02/2022 21:51

Has anyone mentioned PIMS? It might be worth mentioning if you take her to OOH.

www.gosh.nhs.uk/conditions-and-treatments/conditions-we-treat/paediatric-inflammatory-multisystem-syndrome-pims/

SofiaAmes · 08/02/2022 21:55

There is a genetic link between epilepsy and migraine (including abdominal migraine).

StellaGibs · 08/02/2022 21:58

Shes back from OOH now and in bed. They made her do a sample and she had leukocytes in it this time. They said to keep the sample and take in to the GP tomorrow to be cultured.
