Chickenpox for dummies

My little boy has been sent home from nursery with chickenpox and I could really do with some general advice. I’ve sent partner to pharmacist to get cream and calpol.

Me and partner have both had it as children. Just wondering what we need to do as a family. Do we basically need to isolate and avoid other people, etc?

I would isolate yes or at least give people fair warning that they have it so that they can decide.

My best tips are no ibruprofen and if it gets bad, put calamine lotion in a spray bottle and stand them naked on a tiled floor and then spray it onto them. Much quicker than applying with cotton wool and the cotton wool doesn't get stuck to them.

DD had it in her throat so plenty of nice drinks might be needed if they go off eating.

Thank you. That sounds like I good idea, with the camomile. I’ll do that. I’ll stock up on nice drinks too. Hope your dd was okay.

We were on holiday so it wasn't ideal. Poor love missed most of it but DS got some lovely one to one time with us as we took it in turns to either sit with her or take DS out.

There are better creams than calamine lotion these days. Poxclin and virasoothe are supposed to be good. Piriton syrup can help if it's itchy. Oats or bicarbonate of soda in the bath supposed to help too

They are no longer contagious once the spots scab over which is normally within 5-7days

Get some antihistamine and give it to him daily to help ease the itching (worked with both mine!). Unfortunately didn’t stop the scarring with DD1 despite her not scratching the bloody things.

chorusline79 · 04/02/2022 17:21

We have just had it and virasoothe was great

There is no need for the adults to isolate.

Child is infectious until the spots crust over. Once that happens he doesn't need to remain at home any more.

No ibuprofen.

All kids react differently. My son only had a few spots and was happy to eat chocolate and watch the TV. My daughter gots spots literally everywhere and was really quite unwell.

Poxclin mousse (from ASDA or Boots) is far better than calamine lotion

I second poxclin, Amazon delivers it super quickly if you’ve got prime. Oats in a sock and put them into a warm bath, helps the itchy.
Any time of oral antihistmine as well.

Also try to stop the scratching any way you can as they scar really easy
