What happens at paediatrician visit for lump?

My DD(3) has a lump on her lower back that has been there a little over a month. At first we thought she just had a bite, but it has grown and darkened, so I took her to the GP again. GP thought it might be a cyst (and bruised), but referred us on to the paediatrician to get it checked out. We have the appointment tomorrow and I'm just wondering what they're likely to do there? I am a bit worried about it, mostly because DD hasn't really been herself since we noticed it. I thought maybe it was an infected bite, but now worried about something even more sinister!

No experience on this type of appointment - but just wanted to reply to say I hope it goes ok.

I would presume they will take history of current problem, new pead appointments probably also take full history from birth/pregnancy.

They will I would guess examine & then suggest next steps from their expertise -

if you search on here, I can't remember when as time has rolled into one with lockdown etc - but there was a poster with a child who had a lump they saw local pead team who were unsure so then got transferred to specialist children's hospital - i can't recall fine details but outcome was lots of time unknown and worry but they took it seriously & ruled out nasty things & in the end nothing sinister.

Hope it goes well.

Hey @cttontail how did it go?

cttontail · 27/01/2022 14:25

@windowstothesoul thank you so much for your reply. It was just as you said, history taking and the paediatrician had a hit of a poke and said "that's a funny one". It's probably an abscess, but she's got an ultrasound scan booked for tomorrow to check it out. We've also got a referral to the surgeons, because if it is an abscess it probably needs removing.

@cttontail hope the ultrasound was ok & things are progressing in the right direction.

Thanks. It does look like it is just an abscess, thankfully. Waiting on a phone call to determine what they are going to do about it.
