Looking for a bit of advice, my daughter was put on similac alumentium formula just before Christmas, it took a couple of weeks to make any difference but once it did she was like a new baby! She started getting reflux though as the milk I guess is so thin so the doctor prescribed gaviscone which did not agree with her and she was constantly screaming in pain, I heard it makes them constipated but she's been on lactulose to help her go anyway as she struggles with constipation, so I used this again as I started the gaviscone although now I have stopped it as she hated it. I have spoken to my HV about using a thickener in the milk instead of gaviscone but I'm yet to get something for it. However, for the last two weeks she has been displaying signs of CMPA again, I'm aware the alumentium milk is broken down and not completely dairy free. She is very unsettled again, screaming and arching her back, getting dry patches on her face, and she's just done a poo and her poo has gone back to being extremely mucusy again, I am awaiting a dr appointment but I feel like she perhaps needs a fully dairy free milk?? Has anyone else experienced this and could offer any advice?

My daughter has cmpa but I'm afraid I can't advise on formula. We were prescribed sma alfamino but didn't use it.

The cmpa Facebook groups are really helpful and knowledgeable if you're on there.

We had this with our youngest dd. She was prescribed Nutramigen 1 and settled a bit at first but then, same as your dd, her symptoms came back a week or two later with a vengeance and her acid reflux was horrendous. She was given nutramigen aa and put on a high dose of omeprazole for her silent reflux and this worked for her.

I’d definitely ask for the amino acid formula instead and see how she gets on. I hope you find something that works for her, there’s nothing worse than seeing your baby screaming in pain and not being able to do anything about it.

Yes we had this. The totally dairy free milk is called Neocate, life changer. But it is quite expensive on believe so doctors are very reluctant to prescribe it, think it's £50 a tin 😱😱 if i remember correctly.

Mayblossominapril · 24/01/2022 19:36

My dd was given nutramigen for top ups and was fine for exactly a fortnight then all the problems started again!
Neocate was then prescribed and I also gave up eating anything with soya in it as well.
It’s really common for babies to be ok for a week or two and then the symptoms to start again and it’s either the body suddenly realising that this is milk or they are reacting to the soya.
The carobel for thickening milk is good. Easier to get in a bottle fed baby and I think you might need a different teat size.

Both mine are still affected by cmpa at 4.5 and 1.5 so we have experienced most thins cmpa!

It's awful isn't it, I guess it maybe helped for a bit as going from dairy to having it broken down made it a bit easier for her but now she's pretty much the exact same as she was on full dairy😢 I've got the drs today for her so hopefully they'll prescribe a different milk!🤞🏼 xx

We were using Alfamino which is completely dairy-free and this definitely helped. We did have to use a thickener with it (Carobel).

I've got an appointment at 9.40 today to hopefully discuss going onto this milk, she's been screaming all night and only just gone to sleep now so I'm praying we get a change and I start to see a difference in her again😫🤞🏼

Yeah I feel like because she went from having full dairy formula to a broken down one it was easier for her to digest at first and now because it's still there she's having all the symptoms again!! My elder daughter had nutramigen when she was a baby but she never had any symptoms other than a rash 24/7 which wouldn't go with cream so they changed her milk and she was absolutely fine so was never an issue!! I've got the drs in 20 mins so I'm hoping they'll try her on a dairy free as she's been so unsettled, screamed all night last night too so she's absolutely shattered bless her😫

How did it go?

m1r14m · 26/01/2022 12:05

@giftswap2021

How did it go?
Dr said she could benefit from a complete dairy free milk but she said she wanted to consult the HV before doing anything and decide if a referral to paediatrics would be necessary and that she would phone me back once she'd spoken to them but I've not received a phone call back yet🙄 and last night was awful, she didn't settle until 7am so I'm shattered

Thank you, no phone call back today either but the HV is coming out tomorrow so I hope she's helpful 🤞🏼
