Coughing… I don’t know what to do

DD is 15mo, had a cough since 10 months at night. Asthma has been ruled out as it’s a wet cough. It’s EVERY night, but we have stages where it is a lot worse (like now).
Cot it titled, she has a pillow, vicks on feet, dehumidifier, calpol plug in, I’ve tried. But these methods seem to make it worse.
She has a constant cold, and a delayed swallow reflex. GP and PED have said the cough is caused by mucas in the throat and her struggling to swallow. Waiting for ENT But what can I do in the meantime? Neither of us are getting much sleep.
She’s been coughing every 5 minutes for the last 4hours, since going to bed. Keeps waking up crying after a few episodes and is clearly getting frustrated / upset.

Is she old enough for that saline nasal spray?

Mysa74 · 20/01/2022 07:52

Dyou have my sympathy op, that sound ms awful. Nothing worse than sleep deprivation, it's not good for either of you
Does she always sleep in the same place? Could something in the room be causing the problem rather than just lying down?

Ugh this was a brutal phase for DS2. We had 2 winters where we had this every night from October to March. I found the best solution was him sleeping upright on me in the nursing chair. We also had a humidifier for night time and dehumidified during the daytime. It was apparently just because his lung tubes (what’s the word? 😄) we’re too small so he literally grew out of it. Blue inhalers REALLY seemed to help on the worst nights. Reactive Airways I think it was called!

Thanks for the responses. Been using nasal spray a while now, made no difference.
I’ve looked in her room for potential triggers, but can’t see any. Hoover and dust it a few times a week, change the sheets daily due to the amount of phelgm / snot / sick each night, no pets. Open the window through the day for it to air, and have tried vented at night. Any suggestions?

I will ask the GP to trail a blue inhaler, but this is a very wet cough with lots of phelgm. She is gargling when she cries, and snoring when she’s not coughing.

Just to throw something different at you - have you tried excluding dairy?

Exhaustedmum88 · 20/01/2022 17:35

Sorry sound have said yea she’s been dairy free since 3 weeks old.

I would get an inhaler. It worked instantly for my son
