What's going on with DD

DD (11) started with stomach ache and nausea last Tuesday. She didn't eat anything at school and came home looking dreadful. I kept her at home Weds, Thurs and Fri, she started eating more but still not loads.

I took her to the GP on Friday to see what was going on as I was worried about the length of time it was going on and that she didn't seem to be getting much better. She complained about the stomach ache over the weekend but ate just about normal.

Yesterday she woke up with the stomach ache but by the time she was going to school she said it had gone off. Today she's woken up with a bad stomach ache again.

The thing is there's no other symptoms, she's going to the toilet OK, no temp, she's not vomiting. The doctor couldn't find an anything wrong but is sending her for a blood test. What could it be?

I am concerned that it seems worse on school days but she swears theres nothing worrying her or going on at school (yr6).

I am at a loss what to do to help her.

Maybe due to start her periods? This is what my DD was like a couple of months before she started.

Btw, anxiety in kids often presents as stomach ache.

I was thinking periods / period pain, ie her uterus is contracting but there isn't anything to expel.

The other thing I would consider is what is she eating?

I'm lactose intolerant but I didn't know that when I was at primary, I just thought everyone had tummy ache. I had a reputation for complaining of feeling ill on school mornings, but on school mornings I had cereal with milk and at the weekends I had toast for breakfast.

It might be worth keeping a food diary just to see if it is food related.

Celiac disease can develop at any age as can quite a few intolerances.

Bexlily · 18/01/2022 08:14

Thank you, I did wonder if it was period related.

She is also an anxious child so I suppose it could be that too, she insists that nothings bothering her at the minute though.

Thank you sashh wouldn't there be other symptoms with food intollerance though i.e. Diareah? I will keep a food diary, she doesn't eat/drink a lot of dairy products because she doesn't tend to like them.

@Bexlily I think it depends, I eat some dairy now and I'm pretty clued up as to the particular type of belly ache I get if I eat too much or I don't eat other things with it.

I don't like the taste of milk, and didn't as a child, the smell make me feel ill, I can't do that thing of smelling the milk to know if it is off, it always smells off.

It's thinks that you don't really consider dairy that sometimes throw me, home made Yorkshire puddings I have to be careful with, also some pub food has caused some interesting loo visits.

As I said there are a number of food related things it could be, and of course it might not be food related but if you keep a diary then if she has further investigations you already have the diary.

Could be abdominal migraines.

Bexlily · 18/01/2022 08:46

Thank you once again sashh I will definitely keep a food diary and see if we can see any patterns.

Thank you Swanshaped

It could be anxiety related or migraine related? Kids tend to get belly ache instead or as well as a head ache with migraines? Could also be her period about to start. If it’s lower tummy then I would guess on it being period related, if she can’t say specifically where the pain is then it’s likely to be cause by anxiety. If something more was going in she would have other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea).

My dd went through a similar stage at the same age, constantly having a tummy ache, especially before school, she started her period at the end of year 6 and now she only gets tummy ache whilst in her period.

TheChip · 18/01/2022 15:03

Hormone related stomach migraines? Laying on a cold kitchen floor used to be my go to place when I was that age!

My ds has stomach aches when he has certain lessons that he hates. He swears he doesn't feel anxious about them, but his stomach aches tell me otherwise.

Fluffyunicorn1 · 18/01/2022 15:06

my 11 dd has just started her period last week and for the passed couple of months she has had stomach cramps/nausea and headaches on and off and generally feeling a bit crap.

couple of weeks before xmas and and just after she ate like a pig which isn't like her but before that her appetite dropped completely.

it could well be period related

Thank you everybody.

The blood test results are back and it's showing her Vit D levels are borderline. She has been having supplements since we saw the GP last week so I am not sure if that will have effected the results but it looks like we've got an answer.

I'm so you got some answers. Fingers crossed it does the trick and your dd feels better for it
TheChip · 21/01/2022 15:57

I'm glad you got some answers, that was meant to be!
