Silent reflux and gaviscon

Hey Mumsnet,
My little boy is 7 weeks old since week 4 he's been suffering with what I think is silent reflux. I was unable to breastfeed due to low supply so he is on kendamil organic.
He is not posseting much at all but mid he screams, tenses away from bottle, seems be be in so much pain, he then 9/10 gets hiccups thereafter. He drinks 120mls per bottle but the whole feed will take 50 minutes or so because of the winding and settling process that goes along with it.

I went to his 6-8 week post natal today and he is thriving. I told GP about his feeding issues and she showed me the NHS algorithms for CPMA and reflux.
She said she can give him gaviscon or prescription milk. I said I'd like gaviscon but what I really want to try is omeprazole for him.
I don't feel like it's CPMA as he has no other allergy symptoms and has normal stools.

So my question is will gaviscon work for my little one if he's not regurgitating? And does it take a long time to work and also it says up to 6 sachets in 24 hours and 2 sachet per feed if over 4.5kg he's 4.6kg but I gave 1 sachet for first dose earlier. Should I see how he goes before giving 2 per feed?
I just wonder will it help the pains from the acid ?

Unfortunately Silent reflux is just trial and error, Gaviscon didn't work for us but anti reflux milk helped a lot. My little one was the same as yours and although the milk helped a lot it really only got better when the dr said to give him a small amount of porridge from 4 months and that seemed to solve it.

They will want you to try the gaviscon before they prescribe anything so I would give it a go and if no improvement go back to them again.

My DD was on gaviscon and it definitely helped. I don't recall ever putting 2 sachets in a feed and she was on it for months.

Is there a reason you want to use omeprazole? We were prescribed it by the hospital but didn't want to use something so strong and our GP advised strongly against using that prescription unless we were sure the gaviscon didn't help. I was on omeprazole myself and I felt dreadful and had to stop using it - so didn't want my DD on it when it wasn't absolutely necessary.

I wanted to try omeprazole as I'm on it myself and it seems like it's a acid issue for him and gaviscon causes bad constipation. But if the gaviscon works I'll be thrilled. I really hope it does. I took him to Osteopath yesterday because we live near college of osteopathic medicine and they do free baby clinic and he had great settled night last night but back to screaming the house down again today

Do kendamil do anti reflux milk? If so it's defo worth trying as the milk is much thicker than regular milk so helps stop acid coming up. Although you'll Need larger size bottle teats

Gaviscon helped my DD - she would bring up her feeds though, didn’t stop the sick in her case but she wasn’t uncomfortable anymore. I also went up a teat size which helped her, but all babies are different.

My three-month-old baby is on Gaviscon for silent reflux. It has helped him for sure. Even if they don’t sick up milk from their mouth they are still bringing it up they just swallow it back down so it will help. It’s definitely soothed him, I tried him with a reduced amount a few days ago and the night was awful, he’s back on two doses of two sachets a day now. His poos are thicker but he’s not constipated, actually it’s quite good as we avoid blow outs! Only thing is he’s exclusively breastfed and it’s a right pain in the arse to administer but should be fine in a bottle.

Going through exactly the same with my 7 week old.
GP prescribed formula for a suspected CMPA but she was so unsettled that night that we took her to an OOH GP at the hospital who was shocked that she wasnt given Gaviscon as a first step.
Weve been using a combination of the 2 but after 2 doses of Gaviscon she has been like a different baby!
We are giving 6 feeds a day but knly using a whole sachet in the feeds overnight and at the linchtime bottle.
The rest of the time she either has half a dose or none depending on how she is.
She is much happier and sleeping better. Not perfect but she is resting rather than crying every time we lay her flat!
