Croup after covid?

My 18 month old DD tested positive 8 days ago... we all had it as a household.

DD was vomiting and warm over the first couple of days but this sorted itself out and she's had no temperature or sickness recently. Just typical mild cold symptoms.

The last couple of days, her slight cough has become a more 'barking' sound and is raspy and heavy when she's breathing in and out. Her cough also sounds chesty so I don't know if it could be a chest infection and/or croup. Definitely not an emergency as she doesn't have a temperature, she's just about managing to eat and drink (although v fussy with it) and chest isn't sucking in etc.

Phoned 111 last night for advice as her cough is the worst / strangest I've heard from her. Guaranteed GP appointment booked in for today for peace of mind. She's still testing positive on lateral flows so they probably won't want to listen to her chest just yet.

Anyone else's children had something similar post-covid? Heard about steam, running the shower etc but the NHS website says they don't recommend anymore as no proof it works?

Thanks

Hi,

We're in the same boat as you were last week and just wondered how you are getting on? My 13 month old tested positive 9 days ago after my husband and I both had Covid, she had a few days with a spiking temperature and an upset stomach but then seemed quite a bit better for a few days. But now she is full of snot and has a barking cough at night that seems to be getting worse not better. She's also still testing positive on LFTs even though it will be day 10 tomorrow. What did the GP say? Hope things have got better for you and your little one x

Hi Smile

She's much better now thanks! So the GP said it was either croup (barking cough) or potentially bronchitis as occasionally she sounded chesty. They didn't want to see her in person as she was still testing positive on day 8. They were reluctant to help at first 'if it's croup we don't usually treat...' but I kind of put my foot down as I was getting concerned and I asked how we were meant to know it wasn't a chest infection as they wouldn't see her and I'm not a doctor! She also has recently been diagnosed with an issue with a valve in her heart so I wasn't going to risk taking chances without antibiotics.

So she's coming to the end of her course of amoxicillin now and she is SO much better. So either was croup and it's sorted itself out or it was bronchitis / chest infection after all. She was still testing positive on day 8 but we haven't done a test since tbh as it's been a long time after the isolation period for her now

Always so worrying when they're poorly isn't it? Sad hope your little one feels better soon

Thanks for replying, really glad to hear your little one is feeling better its reassuring to have someone that's been in the same situation and is out the other side! I think I'll see how she is today and maybe give the GP a call later if she seems no better. It is so worrying when their poorly, and exhausting too! X
