2 month old intubated for bronchioilitis

My 2 month old nephew has been intubated and sedated for a week for sever bronchiolitis.

Since yesterday he is off the ventilator and this afternoon my sister will be allowed to breastfeed him again finally.

Doctors are saying that he is doing well and in a day or 2 he should go back to be the baby he used to me. Very happy, attentive and smily.

However, my sister is very worried he won’t, after seeing him so ill for so many days.

Do you have any experience with a small infant intubated and how long did he take to return to be the same baby prior the intubation? Despite all the reassurance she is so scared of the baby being neurologically impacted by the intubation.

Thank you all for your replies!

Hope little one's doing alright. I never cease to be amazed at how well babies bounce back from illness. I'd be very surprised if a PICU admission for bronchiolitis caused any lasting neurological problems. The baby will probably be back to normal long before the parents are!

Very sorry to hear this.
As pp it's always so surprising how well babies bounce back.
I hope the parents are doing the best they can Thanks

Yes babies do bounce back, leaving their parents trembling wrecks behind them. Your nephew will just likely be fine but I'm sure your sis and bil will need a bit of TLC.

Agree that the DPs will need some TLC right now.

How's your DN doing now @Laurapnc?

He is improving. He has been extubated and should go home tomorrow. However, he is still too tired to be breast fed. They will try today again

Baby will likely be fine. Parents will never fully recover. Give them lots of time to talk about what they experienced.

After catching whooping cough my newborn caught bronchiolitis on and off for 10 months!!
My mh was shot.
Ds recovered just fine.
He is in the army now and fully fit!!

BunnyRuddington · 13/01/2022 17:55

Glad he's recovering enough to go home. They must all be so shattered.

My son had this when he was 6 weeks old.
He is now 8, I can remember how long it took him to be back to normal but there have been no long term effects.
He is happy, healthy, doing well at school and no more likely to get ill than his brother and sister.
