Blood in baby’s nappy (photo attached)

Hi

My son is 12 weeks old and formula fed.

I noticed yesterday a few small streaks of red blood. Then today almost exactly 24 hours it’s happened again but worse the blood looks darker and more of it.

He had a normal nappy around 11am. He seems okay in himself.

Do you think I should contact 111? Or could this wait until tomorrow to speak to GP?

Thanks so much xxx

No! Ring them now!

superstar84 · 09/01/2022 17:55

Definitely call them now don't wait

Lazylegend · 09/01/2022 17:56

Probably nothing to worry about but I would ring them now, unless someone who's medially trained talks to you. Please try not to worry. X

I rang 111 once about my sons nappy because it was a really really odd colour (almost grey) and googling it made me more scared. Anyway, a doctor called me back. Which was really reassuring. I’d give them a call.

Also, blood could also indicate an intolerance possibly to milk, but best to get checked.

Does he have any other symptoms?
Bloating?
Grunting when sleeping?
Reflux?
Dry or flaky skin?

Hope everything is ok

Hopefully nothing to worry about. Red streaks of blood can just be a little tear in the bottom if a baby has been a bit constipated. However I think it can be a sign of intolerances or other things so it's worth getting it checked out. If baby is other wise fine, I'd call 111 and see an out of hours GP rather than A&E and just keep an eye. Hope all is fine

@Yolo773 thank you for your message, I called 111, now just waiting for GP to call.

He has reflux and makes weird noises when laying flat but apart from that he seems really well, the only thing I’ve noticed is his cheeks are rosey and they never normal are, his temperature is normal though.

Thanks again xx

My now 7 year dd had this for the first few months of her life, she was lactose intolerant . She was bottle fed and i changed her milk to lactose free and within hours ( literally) this stopped. This is one possibility, of course you need to check this out with a GP, but just wanted to give you something to consider.

Sounds Similar to my little boy.

We noticed he was grunting during his sleep at night, fussy and clearly uncomfortable, bloated belly, flaky skin on his face and neck with redness, and a LOT of nappies. He had a lot of mucus in his nappies which is also a sign of an intolerance.
He was prescribed nutramigen and was instantly better
(Honestly I couldn’t believe it!)

Hopefully it is something simple that can be sorted 💐 it’s horrible when worrying about it

I had this with my daughter a couple of times around 12 weeks or so (FTM and I was very concerned!) and it was a tear in her bottom and sorted itself out with no issues. It was only two nappies.
Fingers crossed its just that and gets better on its own for your little one too.

Fingers crossed gp will call you soon
Chances are this is something minor but very fixable but does need medical attention just in case
