This will sound silly but make sure she’s really drying them carefully. Lots of the children in my class developed this in December and I realised their hands were not always dry before they went out in the cold. Unfortunately I can’t recommend a cream but I’m sure someone will have good ideas.

A really good hand cream - I use Flexitol Hand Balm g.co/kgs/chgK6x. You would have to check if it can be used on children although I think so.
My hands crack and bleed in the winter.

She might be allergic to one of the products that she is using. Stat playing detective.

Does she have a family history of allergies like hay fever, eczema or asthma ?

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/01/2022 22:04

Dove do a moisturising hand savtitiser

Try that. Plus hand cream (o’keefes also good) and proper drying as above.

Stop using hand sanitizer!!!! Too strong for kids hands!

Diggersaursarethebest · 09/01/2022 09:04

Get shower oil and use that as handsoap at home plus a tiny bottle to use at school. Lukewarm water rather than hot. Also switch to shower oil for showers if you can - otherwise the soap or ordinary showergel will dry out her hands when she’s washing her body.
Don’t use hand sanitizer if she can avoid it.
Gently pat hands dry on a towel rather than rubbing them.
Get a thick heavy cream with no perfume. Something like sudo-cream can help temporarily replace the lipid barrier - like before going out in the cold with no gloves.
Be careful with gloves and the material they are made of. Wool can scratch and damage the skin without you realizing it. She could use cotton or silk gloves to line bigger gloves or mittens.
If you don’t see improvement in a few days, book a Gp appointment to ask about medicated cream - this would usually be a corticosteroid cream. The steroid cream is used to get the inflammation under control and let the skin heal. Steroid cream doesn’t replace all the moisturizing cream and careful handwashing routine. That needs to continue indefinitely.

Wear gloves whenever she goes out so they’re not getting wind chapped

Something like this would be good. Lots of brands make shower oils and some are more expensive than others. I suggest starting inexpensive - it’s the oil content that matters.

Another option. This one is more expensive though.

Tell the school not to - my friends daughter hands are so bad she told the school Abd they stopped using it on her!

MrsCardone · 09/01/2022 13:01

Dolly & Friends Calming Cream is amazing. It's made especially for children and is excellent for calming sore and inflamed skin. I bought it as it was recommended for eczema, but use it for everything.

bobisbored · 10/01/2022 20:50

Lots of children in my class are suffering with this at the moment. We let children bring in their own hand soap and cream. The school stuff is horrible!

WeAllHaveWings · 10/01/2022 21:01

You could try asking your pharmacist what they recommend, I always found them helpful when ds had skin problems.

GemmaRuby · 10/01/2022 21:05

Get her to apply hand cream every night before bed so it can stay on all night instead of constantly re-applying between washes in the day.

Weleda Skin Food is really nice and thick and greasy - not ideal for the day but I apply it every night before bed and it does help.
