Migraine in 5 year old

DS got sent home today vomiting in class, had been complaining 30 minutes prior that his right eye was hurting. He has additional needs and communication is an issue so it's hard to establish but it seems classic migraine to me.

Is there anything I can do to help him? I've never had to deal with migraines before in my DC.

Have you done a Covid test?

It's unusual for a young child to get a bad headache and a headache is one of the most common Covid symptoms.

I would treat with liquid paracetamol, lots of fluids and rest, whether it's a migraine or Covid.

I hope he feels better soon.

One of my DDs has migraines and they can be pretty terrifying. The first time she ended up in A&E due to the severity of the pain. She has blurred vision, is often sick with them and writhes around in agony. Luckily hers tend to pass within about 2 hours but you have my sympathy.

We give her a dose of both Ibuprofen and paracetamol, try and get her drinking fluids (if she's warm, we offer ice lollies as well as drinks) and lie with her while it's bad, sick bowl close to hand. I stroke her hair, offer her an ice pack for the back of her neck, and play classical music really low. If it's migraine, it's worth keeping an eye out on his triggers - for DD, she tends to get them if she's not had much sleep and hasn't drunk enough water.

Hope he's OK.

I'm not medically qualified but would caution against jumping to the conclusion that he has a migraine. Headache and vomiting could result from many different causes - some serious, some not very. If he were my child I'd be watching him closely and checking with a medical professional.

My DD had migraines from the age of five years. She underwent various tests before they decided that they were migraine From memory, these included kidney scans and an MRI scan. I would push for a referral - DD was eventually referred to great Ormond Street hospital and we found that a lot of the advice we have been given by our GP regarding medication was wrong. We found having something sweet at the first sign plus dissolvable ibuprofen helped

He had covid in December.

I did call the GP but had missed triage by 20 minutes (as I was picking him up from school) so they wouldn't entertain an appointment until I don't miss it tomorrow

Also think about triggers - DD was stress in school (not being able to do some of the work - she was later diagnosed with dyslexia) and the flicker from strip lighting
