Chickenpox, really worried. Am I being dramatic.

1yo son has been poorly for a few days. Really really high fever, I'm covid positive so thought maybe he'd caught that. Then this morning he was so bad I phoned an ambulance. Really really drowsy, cold hands & feet and a rash developing that wouldn't fade under a glass. My thoughts were sepsis/meningitis.

They came straight out and took him straight in. Hours later discharged with chickenpox. No blood tests or anything like that were ran.

Now ever since he really doesn't seem himself, he's slept pretty much 80% of the time, he doesn't want to play, eat or even watch TV. He doesn't want to be touched by myself or his dad. His fever is up and down and his heartbeat seems way faster than usual.

Am I being dramatic to be concerned? I didn't think the chickenpox was this bad. He's really not himself Sad I don't want to bother the NHS again if it's only chickenpox but it's not sitting right with me Hmm

Oh OP. How stressful but I’m glad you’re being taken seriously and the doctor is obviously making sure you get sent to the right place to get the best care.

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 13:22

I am glad you are being taken seriously. Try to stay calm and ask as many questions as you need to.

mommal20 · 30/12/2021 13:36

I can't go with him, his dad is as he is negative. Luckily mums a receptionist on there and she's booked him in and everything. Given dad a list of everything that's going on to make sure nothing is missed x

Managed to test him, he's covid positive. They've prescribed a few bits for him. And two drs have both checked and don't think anything else sinister is going on. Seems the combination of covid and CP has really hit him badly. Hopefully he will start getting better soon xx

Oh bless him hope he gets better soon. Dts ended up in hospital with infected cp and were ill for three weeks.

I wish had known about the vaccine, it never crossed my radar for some reason (ten years ago).

Riddlediddle · 30/12/2021 17:15

Poor little sausage. Hope he's over the worst of it now x

Lindy2 · 30/12/2021 17:26

Oh poor boy. Covid and CP together is very bad luck.

I hope he and you recover quickly.

mommal20 · 30/12/2021 18:43

Thanks guys. I've put some calamine lotion in a spray bottle and I've covered him to stop the scratching. He's perked up now after some paracetamol, it's the best he's been in 2 days so I'm pleased.

Chicken pox can make children very poorly and carries a number of complications - thankfully rare, but they do exist. My DD was one who became very ill.

However your description of the spots "coming and going" is not typical of chicken pox. The spots arrive and stay, and are very itchy indeed, and they become crusty and dry, and finally slowly fade, sometimes leaving scars. I would point out to doc that these do not behave like chicken pox spots.

mommal20 · 30/12/2021 19:02

@Mischance I said it to the doctor and he still told me they are chicken pox, for example this is his neck now compared to earlier so they've definitely relaxed some Hmm excuse the calamine lotion everywhere

He doesn't seem to be scratching either, he doesn't seem phased by them really.

My DS has just had chicken pox - it’s grim on its own without covid on top of it. I’d really recommend porridge oats in the bath (put about 5 spoonfuls in a sock or cut off tights - instant oats work too), as it really helps sooth the skin. Sainsburys do anti-histamine liquid medicine suitable from 3 months onwards which will help with itching if he becomes restless (especially at night). Poxclin mouse is also really good to minimise scarring.

Hope you’re all feeling better soon Flowers

Haggisfish3 · 30/12/2021 19:18

I found the new virasoothe stuff was brilliant, better than calomine. Sorry he is poorly-it’s so horrible.

Cherrytart23 · 30/12/2021 19:32

Maybe its no chicken poxs but covid rash apparently lots of children get a rash with covid so it would make sense the temp and heart rate are also covid signs and if you have covid yourself I would think that over poxs.

BoodleBug51 · 30/12/2021 19:37

Mine were all horribly unwell for 48 hours as they were coming down with chickenpox...... then seemed to improve once the spots started to appear. It can really hit their immune systems.

mommal20 · 30/12/2021 20:55

See my grandad has shingles at the moment and we have seen him in the past couple weeks so it makes sense to be chicken pox but with them coming and going I don't have a clue.

OP posts:
mommal20 · 30/12/2021 20:57

Either way he seems a lot better now just still sleepy and whingey. Temp has been good all afternoon and the spots don't look as bad. Breathing and heart rate back to normal too

Mischance · 30/12/2021 23:00

Good to hear that he is improving. That must be a big relief for you.

ElinorOliphant · 31/12/2021 09:20

Gosh how unlucky to have Covid and CP at the same time, poor little chap.

Hope he recovers quickly

mommal20 · 02/01/2022 10:33

Woke up today, all spots completely gone like they were never there so it definitely cannot be chicken pox. They never blistered, scabbed or itched at all Hmm must be a viral rash from the covid!
