Molluscum

Has anyone had any experience with this in children? I have a 2, 3 and 4 year old. The 3 year old had a tiny spot that looked like a skin tag. Didn't think anything of it and now it's totally spread all over his tummy and legs and the 2 year old has it too. Apparently it's highly contagious but the doctor can't give you anything for it? We've to wait 18 months to 2 years for them to go away on their own? In the meantime I've just to let it spread all over them and possibly to my oldest. I have had a look online and there is a liquid you can get for it but it's quite painful and not ideal for the amount of spots that they now have. The spots are really itchy and it's the scratching that spreads them but how can you explain that to a 2 and a 3 year old. I would appreciate any help or advice or experiences that anyone may have. Thank you

Hi our daughter and son both had it and we used apple cider vinegar on the spots. It turned them black and they fell off. Cheap to use and very effective.
Gave advice to various people and this method worked.
Hope that helps Smile

Oh wow really? Thank you very much for this, I'm definitely going to try it. Can I ask if it was painful for them and how long it took for them to fall off? Thanks again

Both ours had it we never got it . Apparently there a core in the spot might be the tag you describe once thats out it goes .Our had like little blister popped core out and went .
Hot bath and a hard towel off with rough towel ( line dried no fabric conditioner) sorted it lasted a few months .
Before any gasps in horror a the though of us sanding the kids down with a rough towel they didn't mind think it felt good for the scratch and itch .

My son had it this year. GP said they don’t treat it and it will go on its own. It did in about 4 months.

There’s an old thread that’s really good for this - I will find it. When my DD had it I got fed up of waiting and found the biggest spot, and squeezed it when she was asleep until the core came out. Then in a few weeks all the other spots went red and died away. I’ll find the other thread!

DS had a mild case of it but it took a while to get rid of it. In the end we used Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream (recommended on a Mumsnet thread) which got rid of it in about a week.

DS had molluscum for more than a year, it ended up all over him and some have left scars.

As pp have said, the spots have a white core in them, when they become itchy and burst is when they are spread to other parts of the body. Once we knew this, we started watching them closely and would burst each one carefully, remove the core, clean up the area and cover with a plaster until it healed. This is how we eventually got rid of it. I remember bursting and covering the very last one in absolute triumph!

Molludab, over the counter from Boots. Sorts it out quickly, no scars.

It might clear on its own quicker than you think. DD2 had it on her legs and it was gone again within 3-4 months.

Blanketpolicy · 26/12/2021 11:31

Ds had it age 12 and it lasted around 10 months, GPs dont recommend anything because most treatments are not clinically proven and in most cases painful and/or ineffective.

Get lots of small plasters in to stick over the ones that burst to try to prevent further spread to others and be patient, they will go.

Thank you everyone. I feel like he has had them for ages now although probably not as long as it feels. Also seems like every time I look there are more. Too many to count. Was just concerned about the rate they are spreading. I think I will try the Apple cider vinegar from above and see how we go with that. Thanks again for all of your replies.

My ds had them for about 3 or 4 years. Eventually treated with molludab and it did seem to be that that cleared them up. Just have to be really careful with it as it burns the skin you need to air sure it only goes on the actual molloscum.

High dose vitamin C for three weeks worked for my kids. It only properly started to work after 2.5 weeks but by 3 weeks had completely vanished after months and months

Frostytiger87 · 30/12/2021 21:46

My dd had terrible molluscum I tried everything in
The book most of which burnt her delicate skin & left the condition red
In the end I tried Sambucol which can be bought in most chemists and supermarkets within weeks there was a huge improvement it eventually cleared up

Dots for spots or similar hydrocolloid plasters i
On every spot! Draws the core out and keeps covered. And a cap full of bleach in the bath so it’s like pool water. Treat the burst ones with zinc oxide. Nothing else worked but this for me and DD was covered and they were spreading to her face

MrsEricBana · 09/03/2022 00:00

DO NOT put bleach in the bath water!!
Leave well alone and will just go on its own.

Billi77 · 17/03/2022 22:43

A half capful in a full bath is less chlorinated than a pool. taking her to a pool every day wasn’t an option so we made the bath a mini one. And it worked! Was a tip from a Facebook group
