Hi lovely mums out there.
I'm here for the first time didn't know what to do who to turn to.. my daughter is 12 years old and complains of abdominal pain..I first thought it might be puberty but the pain got worse..I took her to a&e two weeks ago and they gave her antibiotics said its urine infection. 2 weeks later same pain again..took her back and the Dr there said it wasn't uti last time..she has protein in her urine and its persistent..I got her blood and urine tests done..blood work looks fine but again there is protein in urine which is 6.5 - mild to moderate- Is there anyone who went through this? Anyone who knows about this please. I'm desperate for answers..Google ain't helping..gp saying nothing to worry as of yet and had emailed pediatrics for advise today.. in the meantime its killing me with worry. Please can anyone help me!!

Sorry you're going through a worrying time, OP. We're just bumping this thread for you in case anyone's around to help.

I would anticipate that the first step would be getting a clear idea of how much protein is in her urine. That's usually done by sending a sample of the first wee of the morning to the lab, to look at the ratio between protein (shouldn't be in there) and creatinine (should be in there) to see how much protein there is standardised against the concentration of the urine. If that's pretty low, they may mainly want to keep an eye on it by arranging regular dip sticks. If it's higher they'll probably want to do some blood tests, looking at how well the kidneys are working, and for some of the causes of protein in urine, like a recent strep infection, or anything autoimmune.

Yeah all the blood work is done apart from gfr, blood seems normal ..TG.. but the ACR is 6.5 slightly high..normal is upto 3. So the gp said its mild to moderately increased. She has abdominal pain every other day which is getting worse and that's what's worrying me. Gp also said blood work is fine which shows kidneys are working properly as of now. But her pain isn't going .. and that is worrying me sick coz one of the symptoms is abdominal pain for proteinuria..

My cousin had similar and turned out she had coeliac disease. Have they tested for that? She was a similar age at diagnosis too.

Thanks. Appreciate it.

No, they didn't check her for that. They are not focusing so much on the pain yet. They reckon it could be constipation and gave her laxido.

Does she have pain anywhere else? In general joints? Any sort of rash?

Luvlymas · 24/12/2021 22:08

She sometimes says under ribs in the back..no rash anywhere..joints are okay..

Hi there, today she was complaining of knee pain and said her ankle bone was hurting 2 days ago too.. how is this related to what she is experiencing?

My DD experienced joint pains in the couple of months before she was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis. The Drs weren't entirely sure about what caused her illness but there definitely can be a link.

Lupus was one possibility that was ruled out for my DD, it can cause joint pain and a butterfly rash on the face as well as the kidney problems.

Is her urine a normal colour?

Is it possible to push for a paediatrician appointment?

Like the previous poster my son had glomerulonephritis. He had very visible blood in urine, high protein levels, painful joints… specifically ankle and hip on one leg and a rash that didn’t blanch and two weeks in hospital that ended up with the glomerulonephritis diagnosis. They did think first it was vaculitis.
It was an autoimmune response to an infection. They did many tests and his results were very off and his complement system was at 0…. Which is his immune system. It took four months to get better and remmission. Such a stressful time and it’s taken me a year to still not worry. Wierdly I’m now doing a child nursing placement on the same renal ward he was on a d have a much better understanding of the kidneys.

P.d s the joint pain could be from internal inflammation, so with vsculitis the blood vessels swell and burst and can cause blood in urine and also rashes

I would ask for blood tests repeated and constant urinalysis. My son needed hospital treatment in the end for hypertension from the kidneys not working.
