Hi, my 5 month old's left eye wanders to the left when she's tired or sleeping (sleeps with her eyes partially open). Any experience with this? Normal or not? Thanks

Yes! My DS had this quite acutely at 5 months. He's mostly grown out of it now (20 months) and I only see it if he's super tired or unwell.

I took a photo at about 5 months and sent it to HV. She referred us to ophthalmology. They saw DS once at 12 months and thought all was likely okay and we're booked back at 24 months to double check.

It could a squint, which we have family of, in which case there are things they can do at pre-school age that can help correct it. Or it could just be something he grows out of. I feel better knowing that ophthalmology are keeping an eye on it (no pun intended).

DS is developing normally and there's nothing to indicate that this is affecting his sight, which is the most important thing.

Eyes disassociate during sleep, so do drift slightly, but Sleeping with eyes partially open is actually a concern too as it can dry the surface of the eye and cause infection.

Please ask your GP to refer you. The medical terms are lagopthalmos and strabismus.
