Do I need to call GP?

My 11 year old has been sick with sore throat and cough for almost 2 weeks now. I'm sure it was tonsillitis as when I was able to shine a light down his throat I saw the tell tale white spots. He has done a PCR test which was negative. The sore throat has really improved and he is able to eat and drink normally although his appetite is reduced. His cough is also much much better although it still hasn't completely gone away. During the day his temperature varies between green and amber on the forehead scanner. So MIL is insisting he should see a Doctor. My feeling is he's really not that sick, he is getting better although slowly. I don't think a doctor will be able to offer anything so I really don't want to bother them. MIL is making me feel like a negligent parent though!

Antibiotics could speed things up a lot though. When my kids had spotty tonsils it was bacterial.

It sounds as if your own assessment and the objective things you describe line up and all of the symptoms are getting better. The majority of cases of tonsillitis are due to viruses (even though it's a condition where medics are relatively more likely to give antibiotics in the early stage of illness). I don't think any medical treatment will make things go faster unfortunately! Are there particular things your mother in law is worried about?

Thanks both. I don't know why I'm questioning myself so much really. I've dealt with plenty of cases of tonsillitis in my kids and in myself. Sometimes it has needed antibiotics but sometimes it's been fine to wait it out and let it get better. I've discussed this with the GP before and she's always tended to lean on the side of not prescribing antibiotics unless absolutely needed, which I've agreed with too. If he hadn't improved, I wouldn't hesitate to call them. But he is getting better, albeit slowly. Probably also worth mentioning he has asd so actually getting him to take medicine is challenging. MIL has always wanted me to call the doctor straight away for anything to with the kids. Funny because she's not like that herself and would always say she's fine even when it's clear she is ill! I know the GP will talk to me if I want, but I hate wasting their time especially at this time of year with COVID at an all time high.
